Abstract History of Cinéma and Expertise Jean-Marc Leveratto This article considers the history and the sociology of cinema from the point of view of the appraisement of the cinematographic quality It demonstrates ?rst the interest for researchers to study the instruments they used to measure the cinematographic quality so as to get a better understanding of the e ?ective conditions of cinema management and of the limits of the history of art ?lms as a means of valuation of the cinematographic quality Then through an analysis of the historical imagery of the producer the cinema manager and the motion pictures consumer it examines the cultural resistances in France to the recognition of the competence of these actors and the acceptation of other means of valuation than the artistic value of the director Therefore it highlights the contemporary rehabilitation by the French State of such means of valuation as industrial know-how motion pictures market and familiarity with current production and the valorization by sociologists of the ordinary spectator's judgement CHistoire du cinéma et expertise culturelle Jean-Marc Leveratto Bien qu'elle ait encore peu suscité l'intérêt des chercheurs l'expertise est une question centrale dans l'histoire du cinéma En tant
