to reclaim a political agency for architecture that reaches beyond mere consent Beyond speci ?c notions such as tectonics topography and tactility the relevance of the text lies in the idea of resistance in its pivotal momentum between modern and postmodern architecture in its forging of a relation with history in architectural production while keeping distance from historicism and in the particular combination of perspectives and value systems questioning architecture ? s role and purpose Frampton ? s text can be understood as an attempt to pursue what German philosopher Jürgen Habermas called ?? by coincidence proclaimed in a text published in the same book in which Hal Foster also included Frampton ? s essay ?? the ? un ?nished project of modernity ? a project that had as its main objective to continuously challenge the normative and to incessantly propel social emancipation and progress Critical Regionalism is an attempt to formulate an alternative for a postmodern position that considers the project of modernity as ful ?lled and retreats to a set of premodern references As such Critical Regionalism proposes a set of disciplinary categories that aimed at understanding architecture beyond aesthetic universalisation But if Frampton had originally set out these categories targeting political repercussions the text ? s critical fortune failed to keep these political objectives alive While many of the categories and concepts of Critical Regionalism became common in design practice in the past decades paradoxically the text itself was all too soon referred to the pages of history books This historicisation of Critical Regionalism neutralised its political charge and merely turned it into an operative perspective for architectural practice Rereading Critical Regionalism today however is an invitation to not only question ?? once again ?? the engaged nature of historiography and criticism but also to re ect upon the political character of architectural design Jürgen Habermas ?
