Ancient glacial activity and flooding created in the Fin ger Lakes produced complex and highly variable soil pat terns. These range from gravelly and low organic matter to loamy and fertile. Soil composition includes shale and limestone. Characteristics The state's Rieslings tend to be very floral in the nose, with vivid apricot, peach and apple flavors. Though most Washington Rieslings are vinted in a dry to off-dry style to accompany food, botrytis wine and ice wines styles are also produced. With annual productions of over 2,000,000 cases a year, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the worldwide leader in the production of Riesling wines by volume. “Finger Lakes Riesling varies on dryness level - every thing from dry, off dry, semi sweet, sweet and traditional ice wines are found in the region. Fruit can range from citrus (lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit) and stone fruits (peach, nectarine, apricot) to tropical fruit (pine apple, guava, passion fruit) and tree fruit (apple, pear.) Non-fruit aromas: Floral can be white flowers, lavender, honeysuckle, citrus blossom; mineral/wet slate; honey, beeswax; aged rieslings can show rubber, petrol; Botrytis affected grapes can give aromas of rye and toast.” Region Website washingtonwine.org fingerlakeswinealliance.com Seneca Lake photo by Finger Lakes Wine Country Yakima Valley photo by Washington State Wine uploads/s3/ riesling-washington-and-ny.pdf
