The soil types include large alluvial terraces of Mindelian origin and sandy clay soils which extend to the foot of the Dentelles de Montmi rail massif. "Protected by the Dentelles de Montmirail overlook ing the village, the Vacqueyras vineyard benefits from a diversity of soils and terroirs. This includes pebbles, fine sands, clay, marl, saffron, sandstone, gravel and frag ments of white limestone. Grenache is king in terroirs with fairly thick, stony al luvium, such as the terrace of the Garrigues de Vacqu eyras." Wine Style Red and rosé grape variety: • Grenache noir limited to 80%. • Syrah and Mourvèdre minimum 15% • Other Côtes du Rhône grape varieties except Carignan are limited to 10%. Red wines: The main grape varieties are Grenache Noir (50% mini mum). Syrah and Mourvèdre must together represent 20% minimum. Rosé wines: Grenache (60% maximum). Mourvèdre and Cinsaut must together or separately represent 15% minimum Characteristics “Reds presents a shimmering, sunny-like color that ranges from ruby to dark garnet. On the nose, it reveals a bouquet of red fruits (bigar reau cherry, crushed strawberry) and ripe black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry) in its youth. It will evolve towards nuances of under growth and truffles. On the palate, the Gigondas is full bodied with a fleshy attack. Its complex terroir gives it a wide range of aromas between fruity aromas (prune, fig) and spicy notes (white pepper, garrigue, thyme, licorice)” "Grenache is the main grape variety in the Vacqueyras appellation. It produces fleshy, deep wines with fairly dense tannins and aromas of very ripe red fruit, reflect ing the sunny side of the region. Grenache is at the heart of “sunny” red wines, full-bodied and warm, with a gen erous roundness. The proportion of Grenache Noir grape varieties in the Vacqueyras appellation should be greater than or equal to 50%."
