As you approach this essay, be sure to place appropriate emphasis on the “personal” aspect of what you plan to write, because you will need to take ownership of and truly tell your story in a way that is not only clear and compelling, but also reveals your personality and individuality. You cannot afford to be generic or vague when stating your goals or the reasons you want to attend a certain school. Instead, you must write with confidence and purpose to convince the admissions committee that you have the maturity and vision to see your goals through. In practically all personal statements, you must discuss—to varying degrees—your past (work experience), present (need for an MBA and the school’s ability to facilitate your academic and professional objectives), and future (career goals) with insight and focus. However, you will see that in this guide, we actually recommend a past, future, present sequence for this essay, because the most logical approach in this case is to first give context and background about yourself, then describe your goals, and lastly, explain why you need the particular school’s resources to achieve those goals. To convincingly argue why a school’s resources are uniquely suited to helping you attain your objectives, you must first clearly state what those objectives are. 7 davechen333@gmail.com David Chen Past: Context and work experience In recent years, many of the leading MBA programs have been somewhat lessening their emphasis on work history in their personal statement prompts. Most schools’ personal statement essay questions used to read a lot like this: Discuss your work history. Why do you need an MBA to achieve your goals? Why do you want an MBA from our program? Our conversations with numerous admissions officers have revealed that many feel the résumé, recommendations, other essays, and interview provide enough information about a candidate’s background that a specific focus on work history in the personal statement is increasingly unnecessary. However, some schools still take a traditional approach in their personal statement prompts, as the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, did during the 2015– 2016 application cycle: Tell us about your path to business school and your future plans. How will the Berkeley-Haas experience help you along this journey? 8 davechen333@gmail.com David Chen Meanwhile, other programs’ prompts, such as the following, do not explicitly ask about your uploads/Industriel/ personal-statement-guide 1 .pdf
