Introduction to Sociology Weekly Canvas Activity Rubric Canvas Discussion activity requirement provides you with an opportunity to engage with your classmates on one or more topics explored in a given week. You will be responsible for taking part in a canvas platform discussion with a small number of your classmates. The teaching team will provide two to three prompts/questions/statements to get the dialogue started. Each student will be required to post one initial response to one of the questions, but to also respond thoughtfully to two of your classmates’ posts. Each week’s activity participation is worth 30% of your course grade. Initial Post: For full credit each post must attempt to fully address the prompt. If there are more than one prompts, you do not need to cover all the prompts, but you need to show depth and thoughtfulness in the one or two that you choose to focus on. You also need to engage and give us your input in light of your own life experiences about the topic under discussion. Your post should consist of at least four to five sentences. You need to demonstrate that you have read the assigned materials and are drawing and building on that material. To give everyone time to reply, your initial post must be submitted by Wednesday at 11:59 P.M. on the week it is due. Responses: For full credit each response must again demonstrate thoughtful engagement with the post and material for the week. Again, each response should be at least four to five sentences and also link the topic with your wider life experiences. Both responses must be submitted by 11:59pm on Saturday the week that it is due. In your reply, you should engage with the post. For example, you could: introduce a new topic that is relevant to the discussion; provide new evidence to support or challenge a position; or add new information to the existing discussion. Both initial posts and replies should provide evidence that you have completed and engaged with the course material for the week. Remember that you must properly cite all materials in your discussion post. The goal of these posts is for you to use your own language to describe concepts. You are only expected to use the course text and addition readings/complimentary material from that week to guide your response. However, it is fine if you use or turn to outside sources. If you draw on materials from outside of the course you MUST provide a proper citation. If you have any questions about citations please ask before you post. We will use the check system to grade your canvas discussion participation and contributions. This means there will be four possible grades: check minus, check, and check plus (/-, /, and /+), and these generally correspond to a C, B, and A grades. We will give zeros to those who don't participate in discussion. Week 1 Discussion Week 1 Prompt: The goal of this week's activity is 1) for you to introduce yourself to your discussion group and For your initial post please : 1) Briefly introduce yourself.
