Top celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has opened restaurants all over the world and h osted popular TV programs such as Hells Kitchen and 'Master Chef' Synopsis Born in Scotland in 1966, Gordon Ramsay left behind his early sports career that was early to be a famous chef in London. By the early 2000s he was making his m ark on British TV as the temperamental host of Hells Kitchen and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. The award winning chef started more restaurants around the world an d has expanded his celebrity brand via programs as such Master Chef and Hotel He ll. Early Life Gordon James Ramsay was born on November 8, 1966, in Glasgow, Scotland and raise d in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Ramsay's first love was football, and he set his sights on a professional sports career. At the age of 15, the gifted Ramsay joined a professional team, the Glasgow Rangers. His time together with the team crossed three years, until 1985, when his career was ended by a knee injury. Forced to start over, Ramsay returned to school and got a degree in hotel management in 1987. Top Chef and Entrepreneur Gordon Ramsay put himself under the direction of some of Europe's top chefs afte r completing his studies. He was an apprentice at Harvey's in London together wi th Marco Pierre White, worked for Albert Roux at Le Gavroche, and then worked in France under master chefs Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon. As head chef of the recently opened Aubergine in London, Ramsay struck out by hi mself in 1993 where, over the course of three years, he earned the restaurant a two star rating from Michelin. More honor followed in 1995, when Ramsay was give n Newcomer of the Year in the esteemed Catey Awards, an Oscars-like occasion for the hotel and restaurant business. Ramsay started his own business, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, in 1998 in London and left Aubergine when the financial backing of the restaurant became unstable. Television Star Gordon Ramsay's move over to television began in 1996 with his appearance as a j udge on the BBC competitive cooking show Master Chef. In 1999, he was the focus of a British documentary mini-series, as he started his first restaurant, Boiling Point, which trailed his working life. The success of that documentary spawned a follow up mini-series, Beyond Boiling Point, in 2000. Ramsey hosted two programs in the spring of 2004: In Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares , he sought to turn around failing restaurants, and in Hells Kitchen, a cooking c ontest ran among 10 stars, with crowds voting off contestants. With reality t.v. being a big hit in the U.S., the time was perfect for Ramsay t o make his move across the Atlantic. In May 2005, an American variant of Hell's Kitchen, which put aspiring restaurateurs under the extreme eye of the host of t he show, debuted on FOX. Like their British counterparts, the American crowd lea rned to love and loathe the abrasive chef as he narrowed the field of players do wn to one final victor. Meanwhile, he found another culinary show back in the U. K., The F Word. Ramsays strong ratings in U.S. t.v. opened the door for a version of Kitchen Nigh tmares, which debuted in September 2007. That consequently led to the American v ersion of Master Chef (2010) and Master Chef Junior(2013), with Ramsay heading t he group of judges. With Hotel Hell, he added another show in 2012, a variation of his save a failing business theme. Outside the Kitchen Alongside his work on TV and in his restaurants, more than 20 publications have been written by Ramsay. His various companies are merged into Gordon Ramsay Hold ings Limited. Honored for his remarkable record of accomplishments, Ramsay was named Officer o f the Order of the British Empire in 2006. He was inducted into the Culinary Hal l of Fame in 2013. Ramsay is married Cayetana Elizabeth "Tana" Hutcheson, school teacher, in 1996. They have four children: Megan, twins Holly and Jack, and Matilda.
