With a massive diehard fanbase Suikoden has become one of the more popular RPG series on Playstation and Playstation 2 (and hopefully, Playstation 3). I truthfully admit to being one of them. As an RPG writer, I had to write for Suikoden Tactics, especially since I tend to prefer Strategy games over normal RPGs. Why write? Well when I started, there was no effective or good guides out for the game, and the ones I saw were pretty much directly copied from the official strategy guide. I do not like this! Therefore, I decided to write my own in a full attack of the game. It took a lot longer then I expected, especially with the large amount of mini games and side quests. Also, going through a horrible side dungeon about 10 times doesn't help... For those of you who are familiar with my writing, you will know I treat every battle like it is your first reading my guide. This is because not everyone reads my guides beginning to end, and only needs help on one or two battles at a time. I also like using open ended terms to allow players to develop their own strategy for gameplay rather then having someone else play the game for them. For those of you who have never played a strategy game before, Suikoden Tactics is easy enough (well, easy in strategy game terms) that you should be able to fall in quickly. Do not expect it to be as intense as Final Fantasy Tactics, that many people claimed was far too difficult, but I had a blast with.@@; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ -~- Basics -~- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Suikoden Tactics is a strategy RPG. How is a strategy RPG different then a normal RPG? The battles are slower paced, and usually more difficult. You will be required to plan your thoughts and actions carefully each round to prevent character deaths. Strategy RPG's usually tend to be incredibly deep, in their own way. If you have never played a strategy RPG, then this is a nice place to start. The game is not as difficult as some Strategy RPGs (S-RPG they are usually known as) and is not as rediculously complex as some of the NIS America titles, which are popular strategy games. One major thing to note in this game is that you can not just walk into a town. As in most S-RPG's, you can not control your character as he/she walks through towns or dungeons. Rather, you can only control them throughout the battles, in a certain area where you can buy weapons and armor, or upgrade your party through a menu. Its a strategy game, not a game based off exploration! ================================================= The Flow of Battle ================================================= At the top of the screen, there is a small list of characters that shows which order the battles action is going to take. If the order is something like... Ally A, Ally B, Enemy A, Enemy B, Ally C, Enemy C Then Ally A acts first, followed by Ally B. Then Enemy A will have his turn, and Enemy B. You have no control over enemy actions on your characters. After Enemy B Acts, it is Ally C's turn, and then Enemy C's turn. Depending on their actions, and the characters speed, certain characters may have quite a bit more turns then others. In this example, Ally A seems to be the fastest character and Enemy C the slowest, but it may not always remain in that same pattern, unchanging over and over again. ------------- Every character, enemy and ally, has HP (Hit Points). Hit Points are a characters Life, and when a character loses all of his or her Hit Points he or she will die, or be forced to withdraw from battle. Some characters will permanently die when they lose all of their HP (it goes to 0) and you will never be able to use them again. How does a character lose HP? If there are two characters fighting one another, let us say, Kyril and Yellow Dragon. Kyril has 60 HP total and the Yellow Dragon has 100. Kyril: 60/60 Yellow Dragon: 100/100 Now, if there are only two characters in battle, then the battle flow on the top of the screen would appear something like this (changable depending on actions and speed): Kyril, Yellow Dragon, Kyril, Yellow Dragon, Kyril, Yellow Dragon If Kyril acts first, and attacks the Yellow Dragon, and his attack hits for 20 damage, the battle would look like this. Kyril: 60/60 Yellow Dragon: 80/100 It is the Yellow Dragon's turn now. The Yellow Dragon is a big buff monster who specializes in physical attacks, and therefore can cause a large amount of hurt to Kyril from just a normal attack. The Yellow Dragon hits Kyril for 30 damage, effectively halving his HP. Luckily, Kyril has an innate skill called Counterattack. Counterattack allows Kyril to counter any normal physical attack on him. Kyril hits the Yellow Dragon back for 20 more damage. Kyril: 30/60 Yellow Dragon: 60/100 Kyril has one more physical attack on the Yellow Dragon, bringing his HP down to 40, but the Yellow Dragon kills Kyril on the next round, causing him to Withdraw. -------------- How do you make it easier to win the above battle? Better equipment makes it easier to win battles in any case, as does elemental effects (we'll talk about that later). If Kyril (thats you) resets the game in frustrtation from losing the battle with the Yellow Dragon, and went to the nearest shop and bought some nice expensive gear and Honed his weapon at the Blacksmiths shop (therefore making his weapon stronger) we will be more than a match in the same encounter with the Dragon. Kyril: 60/60 Yellow Dragon: 100/100 We are working with the same battle flow as last time. Kyril because of his higher speed gets the first attack. His weapon, being Honed by the Blacksmith, is now quite a bit more powerful then it was previously, and does 40 damage a hit over 20. Kyril: 60/60 Yellow Dragon: 60/100 The Yellow Dragon now gets a turn. But because Kyril spent thousands of dollars worth of Potch on nice, new armor, his defense was raised significantly, therefore reducing the total damage he recieves to around 20. Kyril still has his Counterattack ability, and counters the dragon for another 30 damage. Kyril: 40/60 Yellow Dragon: 30/100 With Kyrils final attack, he deals the final blow for 30 damage on the Yellow Dragon, finally ending the battle in your victory. This is the flow of battle at its very simplest. There are many things that influence the flow of battle, which I will explain. But as I also explained, make sure you always have the best weapons and armor possible at any time! ================================================= Basic Commands ================================================= There are many commands in battle of Suikoden Tactics. This section goes over them, and what they mean. Move: Moves the character. Attack: Physically attack with the character. Rune: Use the magic or special abilities equipped on character. Item: Use items equipped to character. Status: See the status of the character. Can be used even when it is not the seleced characters turn. Stand By: End the current characters turn. You will need to master all of these to become effective at Suikoden Tactics. ================================================= Moving and Attack Advantage ================================================= Other then weapons and armor, there are many things that affect the damage you do to the enemies. This section goes over the basics. ----------------------------- Moving is something everyone must learn before going on to anything more advanced, even attacking, in Suikoden Tactics. A character who remains standing there will be unable to attack an enemy unless it comes within one step of them from his own actions. A character can "Move" by selecting the command from the menu that pops up. After doing this, a new screen appears that has uploads/Finance/ suikoden-tactics-guide.pdf
