Mortensen, BYU, 2009 Anticipation Guide American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang Instructions Purpose: The anticipation guide helps the students gain interest over a novel they will soon be reading. It requires them to form opinions that will structure their reading and focus them on some key themes and concepts of the text. It also requires them to make decisions that might be difficult, and learn to defend them. The anticipation guide will also provide scaffolding for later instruction: something the teacher can rely on and use to inspire deeper discussion with the addition of the actual text. Directions: Before reading American Born Chinese, give each student a copy of the handout. Have them mark their opinion to each question. Emphasize that the student needs to make a decision, and not be in the middle. This will help encourage discussion. Inform the students that they will need to defend their answers. After they have filled the sheet out individually, break the students up into groups of 3-4 students and have them discuss their opinions. This will prepare them to defend their answers. After 5-7 minutes, open the discussion to the entire class.
