Xenophon (c.430-c.354 B.C.) was a perceptive and intelligent social thinker and a skilled writer; in his Socratic works he provides us a rich source of information about Socrates and the Socratic circle. Yet in this century Xenophon and his Socratic writings have been shamefully neglected. One result of this neglect is that older scholarship remains more important for the study of Xenophon than for many other major ancient authors. Work on this bibliography has made clear to me that the highest sophistication in our understanding of Xenophon's Socratic writings was reached in the period between 1880 and 1920. After that not only did the rate of publication on Xenophon's Socratic writings steeply decline, but so did the general level of knowledge about Xenophon. Much that had once been known was lost, if not to the archives, then to the active minds of men. One consequence of this decline is that if present scholarship is to advance our understanding of Xenophon, it must first reappropriate what has been forgotten . In our present state, it would be wrong to assume that any piece of past scholarship has nothing to teach us. Therefore this bibliography of the editions, translations, and scholarly commentary on Xenophon 's Socratic writings attempts, within certain limits , to be exhaustive. The first limitation involves the works covered, primarily the Memorabilia , Apology, Symposium, Oeconomicus, Hiero and Agesilaus. Editions and translations of the complete works of Xenophon are also included, as are . those editions and translations of several works which contain one or more of the Socratic writings just named. In addition, scholarship on Xenophon in general, as opposed to these specific works, has been included, but with less effort to be exhaustive. In particular the section of the bibliography on 'The Socratic Problem' is far from complete.
