Vallongue: Terroir with pebbles." "The vineyards are planted at both ends of the appel lation, but mostly in Lirac itself, on the Gard’s classic limestone plateaus covered with a layer of red clay and pebbles. In the centre, at Saint-Laurent-des-Ar bres, the vineyards lie on the Rhône’s ancient alluvial terraces, on soils of rounded quartz cobbles and red clay carried down from the Alps and deposited on a bed of sand. These magnificent terraces have the same Quaternary origins as Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Finally, the slopes on these terraces consist of sand mixed with small stones from successive landslides. This is the type of terroir found in Saint-Geniès de- Comolas, whose red wines are more elegant and less tannic." Wine Style Grenache, Cinsaut, Clairette, Picpoul, Calitor, Bourbou lenc, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan (limited to 10%). Each grape variety is limited to 60%. "Grenache noir (40% minimum), Syrah and mourvèdre (25% minimum), cinsaut, carignan (maximum 10%). For rosés, white grape varieties are authorized up to a maximum of 20%." Characteristics Tavel wine has a stunningly unique colour : a deep lumi nous pink which charms by its pureness. Wines have a sumptuous nose of gourmet aromas: crisp raspberries, plump tasty strawberries, but also sweetmeats and homemade jams from our childhood. A wonderful stroll down memory lane. The mouth feel of Tavel wines is immediately intense. It is a sun wine, rich in warmth and light. Its matu rity reveals itself in the aromas of red fruits, crushed strawberries, black cherries, but also violets and white flowers." The terroir is free-draining, and produces powerful wines with well-structured tannins and good ageing potential. Grenache Noir's aromatic potential and balanced tannins make it an essential grape variety for the production of red and rosé wines of the appellation. It gives rich and generous wines and also gives them a lot of finesse and harmony. It allows the wines to have superb aromas of ripe black cherry, licorice, spices, black fruits and cocoa.
