AGRI-21 BASIC BIOTECHNOLOGY Evaluation/Guide Questions: you may use separate sheet of paper 1. From what you understand in the discussion, give your own definition of biotechnology. My definition of Biotechnology is products that help improve our lives and especially the health of our planet. 2. Which among the milestones of biotechnology caught your interest and why? (give 3) Gregor Mendel discovers genes while working with peas. He lays the groundwork for genetics and he is known as the father of genetic in 1863. This is a very interesting milestone while I'm reading a module. because of the pea plants. When I search online I found that Mendel grew over 10,000 pea plants, keeping track of progeny number and type. So interesting right? In China, the first antibiotic, moldy soybean curds, is put to use to treat boils in 500 BC. this is interesting because of moldy soybean curds. The word moldy is very gross. But the moldy soybean curds found out the presence of penicillin. And right now Penicillin becomes one of the most commonly used antibiotics in the world. Egyptians discovered the use of yeast in making their bread rise in 4000 BC. Did you know that the mixture of flour meal and water was left longer than usual on a warm day and the yeasts that occur in natural contaminants of the flour caused it to ferment before baking. Until the invention of the microscope, Louis Pasteur discovered that yeast was identified as a living organism and the agent responsible for alcoholic fermentation and dough leavening in the late 1860s.Interesting right? 3. Give the ` (1) plants, (2) animals, and (3) human. Be precise with your answers Plant The significant of Biotechnology to plant is to increased crop productivity, and also able to make improvements. And to assist in developing new varieties and traits include genetics and genomics, marker-assisted selection (MAS), and transgenic (genetic engineered) crops. Especially it will facilitate the farming of crops with multiple durable resistance to pests and diseases, particularly in the absence of pesticides. Animal Provides new tools for improving human health and animal health and welfare and increasing livestock productivity, improve the food we eat - meat, milk, and eggs. And can improve an animal's impact on the environment. farmers have been improving livestock herds through enhanced animal husbandry practices and more modern technologies, such as artificial insemination, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, genetic mapping, and cloning. Through biotechnology, farmers can enhance breeding, resulting in healthier herds. Human The significance of biotechnology to human is to make improvement of human health and also offered modern medical devices for diagnostic and preventive purposes, which include diagnostic test kits, vaccines, and radio-labeled biological therapeutics used for imaging and analysis. Give five (5) products that you encounter in your daily life and explain briefly why were they considered as Biotechnology products? These my five (5) Biotechnology products that I encounter in my daily life. The first one is the cosmetics products, cosmetics are notorious for their heavy use of petroleum products. According to Eaton, petroleum jelly (a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons) and mineral oil (a by-product of petroleum distillation) are just two of the fossil fuel-sourced ingredients used in the traditional manufacture of items like lipstick and foundation. However, a chemical biotech process called metathesis now allows renewable vegetable oils to be converted into suitable substitutes for petroleum-based ingredients. This also decreases fossil fuel dependence and eliminate toxic by-products. The help of chemical biotechnology the cosmetic products it is becoming smoother and less greasy feel. The second is alcohol, because of the pandemic right now all the activities restricted and limit all movements that's why everyone is just at home. Because of that, I encounter alcohol at home. Alcohol production is one of the most basic applications of industrial biotechnology. According to hillier, beer is made from water, a starch source such as barley, brewer's yeast, and a flavoring such as hops. The starch in the barley must be converted to sugar by enzymes (which are activated when the barley is malted) then fermented (the brewer's yeast metabolizes the sugars to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide). Enzymes and microbes are two common tools used in industrial biotechnology. Why alcohol is a biotechnology product? Fermentation is biotechnology in which desirable microorganisms are used in the production of value-added products of commercial importance. Industrial fermentation processes are conducted with selected microorganisms under specified conditions with carefully adjusted nutrient concentrations. The third is Pandesal (bread) because pandesal has become part of the typical Filipino breakfast as, unlike rice that needs prep time, it can be easily purchased hot and fresh from the bakery. In 4000 BC, Egyptians discovered the use of yeast in making their bread rise and for preparing wine. The yeast is one of the ingredients of the bread. The baking of yeast-leavened and sourdough breads represents one of the oldest biotechnical processes, together with the brewing of beer, sake and wine, and the production of yogurt and cheese, etc The fourth is Textiles, my mother is a dressmaker that’s why I saw many textiles at my house. According to Gopalakrishnan, nature has provided us with textile fibres such as cotton, wool and silk but there is now the potential to harness biotechnology and produce new or modified fibres as well as improving the production yields of existing fibres. Many textiles produced from cotton undergo a harsh bleaching process, typically with chlorine or chemical peroxide, during their transformation into a finished fabric. But a biochemical form of peroxide can now be produced using bioengineered cellulose enzymes, which allow textiles to be bleached at a lower temperature and within a neutral pH range. The resulting fabrics are softer, more easily dyed, and less harmful for the environment. Marco Miguel P. Francia BSA-II SLSU TAYABAS AGRI-21 BASIC BIOTECHNOLOGY The last is food and drink, The food and drink industry uses many products that can be produced using biochemicals — from bioplastics which are now widely used for packaging in supermarkets to flavours, fragrances, sweeteners, souring agents and acidity regulators which are used in a wide range of food products. And also the GM food technology is a one of the advanced technology of era that has potential to solve problems of malnutrition, hunger and poverty. There so many biotechnology products all over the world. References Ramon D, Diamante A, Dolores Calvo M (2008) Food biotechnology and education. Electron J Biotechnology.
