Propeller guide 2 A PERFECT MATCH A correct choice of propeller is absolutely vital to get the most out of your engine and boat. Their performance decides whether the power produced by your engine and drive is turned into boat performance – or not. And it’s not only size and pitch that matters. Genuine Volvo Penta propellers are designed for their specific task. The wide range covers propellers for shaft installations, single-propeller drives, Duoprop drives and saildrives as well as for the revolutionary IPS. Production quality is exceptional with minimized tolerances, ensuring high and reliable performance, year after year. Volvo Penta propellers are perfectly matched to engine characteristics and drive hydrodynamics. This gives you the best overall efficiency, which benefits you – and the environment – as you reduce fuel consumption. It also gives your engine and drive a long service life, as they work with the load they’ve been designed for. MPS tool For correct analysis and prediction of boat related information such as propeller options, top speed, shaft dimensions, etc. Please refer to Volvo Penta Marine Propulsion Software at “vppn.volvo.com”. The MPS tool is intended for the Volvo Penta organisation, our boat builders and dealers. The MPS tool is free to use. 3 CONTENT Developed by Volvo Penta 4 Propeller anatomy 5 Duoprop technology 7 PROPELLERS FOR AQUAMATIC Duoprop for DP280, 290 drives Type A 8 Type B 9 Type C 9 Duoprop for the DPX drive – Type E 9 Single propellers for the 200-290 drives 10 Duoprop for the DPS drive – Type D 13 Duoprop for the DPS drive – Type F 13 Duoprop for the DPS drive – Type I 13 Single propellers for the SX-drive 14 Duoprop for the DPH drive – Type G 15 Duoprop for the DPR drive – Type GR 15 PROPELLERS FOR VOLVO PENTA IPS Type T 17 Type P 17 Type Q 17 PROPELLERS FOR SAILBOATS Volvo Penta folding propellers 18 2-blade folding propeller 19 3-blade folding propeller 20 4-blade folding propeller 21 Fixed propellers for S-drive 22 4 DEVELOPED BY VOLVO PENTA Developing a new propeller takes over one year of computer calculations to ensure the props are equally efficient at any speed and under any load. Cavitation tunnel test, real- life close-up studies of prototypes and boat testing. All this, to determine that the feel is perfect and what performance they give. We continuously develop the entire package; engine, drive and propellers. SUPER-STRENGTH MATERIAL The different materials used are all super-strength and crafted for propeller duty. This gives a certain built-in flexibility. The material handles the forces without bending or breaking. THE EFFICIENCY A combination of curving, blade surface and cavitation design. Only when all these factors are perfect do you get maximum efficiency. THE BALANCE Each propeller is perfectly in balance, in weight, size and cavitation. Essential for secure grip in curves and driving safety. THE BUSHINGS Much more than a piece of rubber! Each propeller has its bushing specifi- cally adapted to handle turning and pulling forces. The bushing gets its final shape and performance when the correct fastening torque is applied. Essential for smooth shifting and long drive-train lifetime. 5 3 OR 4 BLADES A 3-blade propeller usually offers top speed performance while a 4-blade propeller provides maximum thrust and smooth cruising operation. DIAMETER Diameter is the distance across a circle encompassing all of the propel- ler blades. Measure from the centre of the propeller hub to the tip of the blades and multiply this by two. PITCH Pitch is the theoretical distance a propeller will move through the water for each revolution (i.e. a 21” pitch propeller should move a boat forward 21” for each revolution, assuming there is no slippage). RIGHT HAND OR LEFT HAND ROTATION In most cases, right hand propellers are used for single engine applications and one right hand and one left hand propellers are used for twin engine applications to achieve better steering control. CUPPED BLADES This is a technique used to enhance the performance of propellers under certain conditions; a cupped propeller will exhibit very high efficiency at high speeds as well as minimize cavitation under heavy loads. RAKE Rake is a special design feature. Positive rake benefits from normal bow lift to permit the use of a larger diameter propeller, while negative rake can provide extra blade strength for use in very high speed applications. Right Left Cupped Un-Cupped 0° Rake 20° Rake W.O.T. Wide open throttle. With the boat fully loaded the boat should run within 200RPM’s of the maximum rated RPM of the engine. RPM: Revolutions per minute . Prop size differences have a big impact on boat performance. For example: • If at W.O.T. the RPM is too high, you will need to try a prop with a higher pitch or higher diameter. • If at W.O.T. the RPM is too low, you will need to try a prop with a lower pitch or a lower diameter. 20° PROPELLER ANATOMY 6 VOLVO PENTA DUOPROP 7 VOLVO PENTA DUOPROP – TECHNOLOGY WITH A GRIP Nothing bites into the water as efficient as Duoprop. It was introduced by Volvo Penta in 1982 – the biggest event in boating since the Volvo Penta aquamatic drive was introduced. The principle behind Duoprop is simple: The counter rotating twin propellers eliminate the lateral forces existing in conventional single propeller stern drives. Consequently the en- gine’s energy and power is concentrated on driving the boat forward – not sideways. This results in several benefits for your boating pleasure. FASTER ACCELERATION, LOWER FUEL CONSUMPTION Duoprop provides up to 30% faster acceleration and produces a top speed 5% faster than any conventional single propeller system – without increasing fuel consumption. With a partial load, you can expect between 10 and 12 % lower fuel consumption. FASTER PLANING A better grip in the water means getting up and onto the plane faster. And staying there at lower revs. MANOEUVRABILITY IS BETTER TOO Whether at high speeds, making sharp turns, or when docking in a crowded marina – the grip is there. Duoprop also reduces the boat’s tendency to roll. LOWER VIBRATION AND NOISE LEVELS Duoprop produces lower vibration and noise levels due to the fact that shock pulses are distributed over more blades. With its counter-rotating propellers, it is almost cavitation free. VOLVO PENTA DUOPROP 8 VOLVO PENTA 280-290, DPX DRIVES DUOPROP FOR DP280, 290 DRIVES – TYPE A Aluminium DP propeller for diesel engines. The unique design, of the 3-blade propeller in the front and the 4-blade propeller behind, is the key to the outstanding grip in the water. Note! The high speed is achieved through thinner blades and powerful thrust. Greater torsional strength adds faster acceleration. The stainless steel material makes the propellers durable and highly resistant to cavitation, damage and corrosion. All these factors contribute to excellent handling and comfort. Propeller cone: shaft 20 mm – 872549. shaft 16 mm – 872614. DUOPROP FOR THE DPX DRIVE – TYPE E The stainless steel DP-E propeller is specially developed to handle the high forces of the DPX high speed drive. Handling speeds up to 75 knots put high demands on the propellers performance.
