SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY Office Memorandum DATE: April 23, 2019 TO: Graduating Class of 2019 FROM: Director, Faculty & Administrative Services SUBJECT: Commencement and Graduation Luncheon Information Please review the following information regarding graduation activities carefully and let me know if you have any questions. Tuesday, May 14, 2019 6:30 p.m. Honors Convocation, Alumni Memorial Union Ballroom Academic Apparel will not be worn. Welcome Remarks: Mr. Gordon Kelch Closing Remarks: Ms. Tessa Holmes 7:30 p.m. Reception to follow Honors Convocation – Alumni Memorial Union Ballroom TICKETS NOT REQUIRED – Response required Saturday, May 18, 2019 4:30 p.m. Baccalaureate Mass, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena (400 W. Kilbourn) Concelebrated Mass. Attendance is optional; academic apparel will be worn for students processing (if processing, you must arrive by 4:00 p.m.). For additional information: http://www.marquette.edu/commencement/baccalaureate.php. Seats are available on a first-come, first served basis. The Mass is expected to end by 6:00 p.m. Entrance and seating for people with special needs: Enter at the main doors on West Kilbourn Avenue. The elevator is located on the west side of the stairs. Seating is located on level 1. TICKETS NOT REQUIRED 7:30 p.m. School of Dentistry Hooding Ceremony, Gesu Church (1145 W. Wisconsin Avenue) Academic Apparel will be worn; however, caps will not be worn. Program will include: Processional by Class of 2019, Welcome (Mr. Jonathon Traska), Hooding Ceremony, Dentist Pledge (Mr. Alexander Flynn) and Closing Remarks (Ms. Kealey Neuville). Students should arrive by 6:45 p.m. Once your family members and guests have been seated, please line up (alphabetically) in the back of the church. Graduating Class of 2019 Page 2 The Hooding Ceremony represents your welcome into the profession of Dentistry. Drs. An and Engibous have been selected by your class to participate in the Hooding Ceremony. All individuals participating in the Hooding Ceremony must be dentists and wear academic apparel. Academic apparel for mentors and family members will be collected following the ceremony at Gesu Church. Volunteers will be in the back of church to collect mentors/family academic apparel. Elevator: If you need an elevator, enter at the side doors (west entrance) of Gesu Church. The elevator is located on the west side of the stairs. Parking: All University lots will be open during graduation weekend. There is also limited street parking. TICKETS NOT REQUIRED Sunday, May 19, 2019 8:30 a.m. Commencement, Fiserv Forum (1111 Vel R. Phillips Avenue) Graduating seniors should enter through the Atrium of Fiserv Forum, located on the east side of the building, next to the Plaza (see attached map). Candidates should arrive by 8:30 a.m. Procession lines will form at 9:00 a.m. There will be no rehearsal, complete instructions will be provided at the Fiserv Forum. Please assemble around the School of Dentistry banner (Mr. Joshua White will lead). All candidates will march in the academic procession and be seated during the Commencement ceremony with their class. 9:30 a.m. Commencement Begins Attendance is required of all candidates. Academic apparel is to be worn (including hats-you will carry in your hoods). Tickets are not needed; families and friends are invited to attend. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is expected to be over by 11:30 a.m. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. Entrance and seating for people with special needs: The drop-off area is located along Juneau Avenue off Sixth Street near the BMO Entrance at the northeast entrance of the building. There are 7 guest elevators throughout Fiserv Forum located in the northeast corner (by Section 120), southeast corner (by Section 102), and northwest corner (by Section 113). Wheelchair platform areas are located throughout the arena. Parking: Parking near Fiserv Forum is available in the 5th Street Parking Structure located at 1215 N. 5th Street, or in the Highland Garage located at 1030 N. 6th Street. (Please refer to the Fiserv Forum map.) It is highly recommended to prepay for parking in either structure by going to the links below. Graduating Class of 2019 Page 3 Security and Bag Policy - Please plan your arrival time accordingly Fiserv Forum uses walk-through metal detectors upon entry. All permitted bags will require a reasonable search by security personnel upon entry. Permitted bags should be soft-sided, no larger than 14"x6"x14" and able to fit completely beneath an arena seat. No backpacks will be allowed. (Drawstring-style backpacks are permitted.) PROHIBITED ITEMS Silly string is absolutely prohibited in Fiserv Forum, due to the damage that it causes to surfaces and equipment. There will be a significant fine charged to the college/school for any student using silly string. For more information on prohibited items, please visit the commencement website. 11:45 a.m. School of Dentistry Graduation Luncheon, Pfister Hotel (424 E. Wisconsin Avenue) 11:45 a.m. No Host Reception – Foyer of Grand Ballroom 12:30 p.m. Guests Seated – Grand Ballroom 12:45 p.m. Class of 2019 Processional (Led by Mr. Joshua White) Welcome (Mr. Aatif Nowman) 1:00 p.m. Invocation followed by Luncheon/Program (above times approximate based on length of commencement activities at the Fiserv Forum) Academic apparel is to be worn (hats optional). Luncheon tickets may be purchased at a reduced price of $10.00 each. Tickets are being underwritten by Dean Lobb. Tickets may be purchased from the Office of the Dean beginning Monday, April 29. TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED BY Friday, May 3. See attached schedule for times tickets may be purchased. Make checks payable to Marquette University Dental Senior Luncheon (please make sure your telephone number is on the check). Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and will be limited to 5 (this includes the graduate). Cash or check only. If you wish to sit with another member of your class and his or her family, you should come together to purchase your tickets. If extra tickets are available, I will notify you after ticket sales are completed. The menu for the luncheon will be as follows: Entrée ($10.00): Entrée Salad – Honey Ancho Chicken with couscous and roasted vegetable salad Dessert – Caramel chocolate, crisp pearls, salted shortbread cookies, whipped cream, chocolate deco Freshly baked baskets of rolls w/butter Choice of milk, coffee or teas included Vegetarian Entrée ($10.00): Entrée Salad – Grilled vegetables over creamy mascarpone jumbo couscous, chopped romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, braised baby onions Dessert - Caramel chocolate, crisp pearls, salted shortbread cookies, whipped cream, chocolate deco Freshly baked baskets of rolls w/butter Choice of coffee or tea included Please let me know if there are any special dietary needs. Graduating Class of 2019 Page 4 Round tables of ten are available and table selection and reservations will be made at the time you purchase your tickets. Please remember if you wish to sit with another student that person's tickets must be purchased at the same time. Parking: The Pfister Hotel will provide discounted parking at $6.00 per vehicle, please identify yourself as Marquette University when entering the lot. Additional street and public parking lots are available near the Pfister Hotel. TICKETS REQUIRED – Response required FOR YOUR INFORMATION Academic Apparel: Academic Apparel has been ordered for you. Academic apparel (caps and gowns only) will be distributed at Alumni Memorial Union, Marquette Place, 2nd Floor Tuesday, May 14 (10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) and Wednesday, May 15 (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). If the candidate cannot pick up his/her own apparel, a friend or relative may come in his/her place. Note: If someone else is picking up your academic apparel, they will need to know your height and indicate they are picking up for a dental graduate (doctoral gown). There is no charge to the graduate for academic apparel. Hoods will be presented on Saturday, May 18 at the Hooding Ceremony. Academic apparel will NOT be distributed at the Fiserv Forum. Academic Apparel will be worn at Commencement, Hooding Ceremony and Graduation Luncheon. All gowns and hoods must be returned to the proper receptacles that will be placed in the outer hallway of the Grand Ballroom at the Pfister Hotel (following graduation luncheon on Sunday, May 19). Tassels and caps may be retained as keepsakes. Announcements: An announcement from the President of the University will be sent to parents or spouses, as indicated by the graduates when they apply for graduation. There is, however, no limit to the number of family members and friends who may attend the Commencement exercises at 9:30 a.m. at Fiserv Forum. To order printed graduation announcements, please visit the Jostens website. Diplomas: Diplomas are given out at the Pfister Hotel and not the Fiserv Forum.
