Die Behandlung von Krankheiten durch schwedische Heilgymnastik (Lings System), eine Methode, welche früher von nur wenigen Aerzten angewandt worden ist, hat erst in den letzten Jahren weitverbreitete Anerkennung gefunden. In Folge dessen ist dieselbe zu einer bedeutenden Branche der Therapie herangewachsen, und die sich fortwährend steigernde Aufmerksamkeit, welche die Aerzte dem günstigen Erfolg ihren Kuren gewidmet haben, hat eine grosse Nachfrage nach der darauf bezüglichen, schon vorhandenen literarischen Produktion hervorgerufen. Da bis jetzt keine Bibliographie vorhanden ist, und ich selber den Mangel eines solchen schwer empfunden habe, wurde in mir der Wunsch rege, diesen Band zu veröffentlichen, um einen Leitfaden zu der grossen Anzahl schon vorhandener literarischer Produkte zu verfertigen. Im Anfang war es meine Absicht, eine Sammlung der Titel aller bedeutenden bis jetzt publizierten Schriften (alte und neue) über Ling's System der Heilgymnastik zu ver- anstalten, einschliesslich der pädagogischen Gymnastik, welche letztere die Gründlage der ersteren ist. Im Anschluss daran fühlte ich mich ausserdem gedrungen, der Vollständigkeit halber, die beiden anderen Abteilungen des Ling'schen Systems, die militärische und die ästhetische, mit einzuschliessen. Aber während der Arbeit des Klassifizierens stellte sich die Unmöglichkeit heraus, eine scharfe Linie zu ziehen zwischen dem ursprünglichen Ling'schen System der Heil- gymnastik und den modernen Methoden und solche Abweichungen wie die weitverbreiteten Zweige der Massage, nebst den Versuchen, die menschliche Hand durch künstliche Maschinen zu ersetzen etc. Dieser Band ist dadurch zu einem Index der Schriften herausgewachsen, welche alle Branchen der Heilgymnastik im allgemeinen und des Ling'schen Systems im besonderen umfasst. Wo irgend möglich habe ich versucht, durch eigenes Nachschlagen in den ge- nannten Originalbüchern, Zeitschriften und Journalen, die Aechtheit der Referenzen im Text zu bestätigen. Dieses war jedoch mit so vielen Schwierigkeiten verbunden, dass ich ge- zwungen war, die Herausgabe dieses Werkes, welches irn Frühjahr 1908 erscheinen sollte, um ein ganzes Jahr zu verzögern. Um diesen Band bis auf die gegenwärtige Zeit zu bringen, ist ein Appendix der neuerschienenen Schriften von 1908 beigefügt worden. Die hauptsächlichen Quellen meiner Erforschungen sind: Index Medicus, Canstatt's (später Virchow und Hirsch) Jahresberichte über die Leistungen und Fortschritte der ge- samten Medicin, Schmidt's Jahrbücher der in- und ausländischen gesamten Medicin, Index Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon General's Office U. S. Army, Katalog der Bibliothek des Königlichen Gymnastischen Zentral-Institutes zu Stockholm und meine eigene Privat- Sammlung von Büchern und Schriften. Die Hauptartikel in dem "Tidskrift i Gymnastik" und " Athaneum für rationelle Gymnastik" sind unter ihren respektiven Rubriken geordnet worden. in Folge der grossen Menge der Details und der Tatsache, dass das Material mehr wie ein Dutzend Sprachen umfasst, fürchte ich, dass sich trotz meiner Bemühungen einige Fehler und Versehen eingeschlichen haben könnten, und werde ich sehr dankbar sein, irgend welche Aufklärung in Hinsicht auf die nächste Auflage entgegen zu nehmen. Le traitement des maladies par moyen de la gyinnastique medicale suedoise (Systeme Ling) une methode qui jusqu' ä present s' etait bornee ä quelques practiciens, a recemment ete reconnue par la monde entier et est devenue une branche importante de la therapeutique. L'attention croissante qui a ete accordee par la profession medicale au succes de ce traite- ment, et son adoption grandiscente, ont cree comme resultat legitime une grande augmentation dans la litterature ä propos de ce sujet. Comme jusqu'ä present une bibliographie n'a pas ete publiee, dans son absence mon experience particuliere m'a decide ä preparer ce volume dans l'espoir que d'autres y trouveraient un guide utile, vu meme la litterature qui existe dejä concernant ce sujet. Au commencement ce n'etait mon intention que de recueillir et faire en meme temps un catalogue de toutes les plus importantes oeuvres, anciennes et modernes, publiees sur la gymnastique medicale du Systeme Ling, y inclus la gymnastique pedagogique qui etait le commencement de l'autre; les deux autres portions du Systeme Ling, c'est ä dire le militaire et l'aesthetique, j'etais force de les combiner pour rendre l'oeuvre plus complete. Mais, pendant le proces de la Classification, je trouvais que c'etait ä peu pres impossible de tirer une limite entre le vrai et l'original Systeme Ling, ayant rapport ä la gymnastique medicale, et les methodes modernes alliees et entre telles variations comme le massage pratique, partout, et les essais de remplacer la main humaine par des machines, etc. Par consequent ce volume s'est developpe en un catalogue de litterature ayant rapport ä la gucrison par mouvement en general et avec une reference speciale ä la gymnastique medi- cale du Systeme Ling. Partout oü cela m'a ete possible, j'ai essaye de verifier l'exactitude des renseignements du texte, par comparaison actuelle avec le livre original, la brochure ou le journal indique. Ccpendant, j'ai eu devant moi, une täche beaucoup plus difficile qu'on n'aurait pu le supposer et au Heu de reussir ä publier ce livre au commencement de 1908, l'oeuvre a inevitablement du etre remisc jusqu'au commencement de 1909. Pour rendre le volume absolument au courrant, j'ai ajoute des details de la litterature de 1908. Les sources principales d'oü ce sujet a ete tire sont les suivantes: Index Medicus, Canstatt's (d'apres Virchow und Hirsch's) Jahresberichte über die Leistungen und Fort- schritte der gesammten Medicin, Schmidt's Jahrbücher der In- und Ausländischen gesammten jMedicin, Index Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon General's Office U. S. Army, Cataloque de la bibliotheque de l'Institut Royal Central de la Gymnastique ä Stockholm, et ma collection particuliere de livres et brochures. Les articles principales du "Tidskrift i Gymnastik" et "Athaneum für rationelle Gymnastik" ont ete classifies chacun ä sa propre place. VI Vu la grandc quantite des details concernes et le fait que la matiere a ete traitec en plus d'une douzainc de langues differentes, je crains que quelques erreurs et omissions (malgre tous les soins possibles) ne se soient glissees dans le texte. Je serai tres reconnaissant ä quiconque qui aura la bonte de rediger ces erreurs, pour qu'elles soient corrigees dans l'edition suivante. The treatment of disease by means of Swedish medical gymnastics (Ling's System), a method which until comparatively recently was confined to but a few practitioners, has of late years received world-wide recognition and become an important branch of therapeutics. The greatly increased attention accorded by the medical profession to the success of this treatment, and its more general adoption, have naturally resulted in a large increase in the literature of the subject. As no bibliography has yet been compiled, my own experience of the want of such has led ine to prepare this volume in the hope, that others may find it a useful guide to the by no means inconsiderable amount of literary produetion already in existance. At first it was only my intention to collect and catalogue all the more important published writings (old and new) about Ling's medical gymnastics, including his pedagogical (educational) gymnastics, the latter being the foundation of the former ; the other two divisions of Ling's System, the military and the aesthetic, I feit bound to include for the sake of completeness. But during the process of Classification, I found that it was practically impossible to draw a hard and fast line between the true and original Ling's sytem of medical gymnastics and the modern allied methods and such variations as the widely-used massage and the attempts to Substitute machines for the human hand, etc. This volume has therefore developed into an index of literature on the movement eure in general, with special reference to Ling's medical gymnastics. Wherever possible, I have endeavoured to verify the correetness of the references in the text by actual consultation of the original book, pamphlet or journal named. This however proved a much more difficult task than was antieipated; so much so, in fact, that the publication of this work, instead of taking place early in 1908, was unavoidably post- poned to the early part of 1909. In order to bring the volume up to date, an appendix of the literature of 1908 has been added. The following have been the chief sources of the subject matter: Index Medicus, Canstatt's (afterwards Virchow and Hirsch's) Jahresberichte über die Leistungen und Fort- schritte der gesamten Medicin, Schmidt's Jahrbücher der in- und ausländischen gesamten Medizin, Index Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon General's Office U. S. Army, Catalogue of the library of the Royal Central Gymnastic Institute of Stockholm and my own private collection of books and pamphlets. The leading articles of the two journals "Tidskrift i Gymnastik" and "Athaneum für Rationelle Gymnastik" have been duly arranged and classified.
