HEALTH • Fire m ay produce irritating and/or toxic gases. • Contact m ay cause burns to skin and eyes. • Contact with m olten substance m ay cause severe burns to skin and eyes. • Runoff from fire control m ay cause pollution. PUBLIC SAFETY • CALL EM ERGENCY RESPONSE T elephone Num ber on Shipping Paper first. If Shipping Paper not available or no answer, refer to appropriate telephone num ber listed on the inside back cover. • As an imm ediate precautionary m easure, isolate spill or leak area for at least 25 meters (75 feet) in all directions. • K eep unauthorized personnel away . • Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream . PROTECTIVE CLOTHING • W ear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). • Structural firefighters’ protective clothing will only provide limited protection. EVACUATION Large Spill • Consider initial downwind evacuation for at least 100 m eters (330 feet). Fire • If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLA TE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 m eters (1/2 m ile) in all directions. In Canada, an Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP) m ay be required for this product. Please consult the shipping document and/or the ERAP Program Section (page 391). P age 204 ERG 2016 fLaMMabLe soLids GUIDE 133 EMERGENCY RESPONSE FIRE Sm all Fire • Dry chem ical, CO 2, sand, earth, water spray or regular foam. Large Fire • W ater spray , fog or regular foam . • Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Fire Involving M etal Pigm ents or Pastes (e.g. “Alum inum Paste”) • Aluminum P aste fires should be treated as a com bustible metal fire. Use DR Y sand, graphite powder, dry sodium chloride-based extinguishers, G-1 ® or M et-L-X ® powder. Also, see GUIDE 170. Fire involving T anks or Car/T railer Loads • Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. • For m assive fire, use unm anned hose holders or m onitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. • W ithdraw im m ediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. • AL W A YS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. SPILL OR LEAK • ELIM INA TE all ignition sources (no sm oking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). • Do not touch or walk through spilled m aterial. Sm all Dry Spill • W ith clean shovel, place m aterial into clean, dry container and cover loosely; move containers from spill area. Large Spill • W et down with water and dike for later disposal. • Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basem ents or confined areas. FIRST AID • Ensure that m edical personnel are aware of the m aterial(s) involved and take precautions to protect them selves. • M ove victim to fresh air. • Call 911 or em ergency m edical service. • Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. • Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. • Remove and isolate contam inated clothing and shoes. • In case of contact with substance, im m ediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 m inutes. • Rem oval of solidified m olten m aterial from skin requires m edical assistance. • K eep victim calm and warm .
