BYOD/BYOT Implementation Guide for Fifth Grade Fayette County BYOT Policy Use the link above to access frequently asked questions as well as the Student Code of Conduct. How do I know if using technology is safe? The technology resources are provided for educational purposes that promote and are consistent with the instructional goals of the Fayette County School System. All fifth grade students are expected to use their assigned chromebook for only educational purposes. Fayette County has in place firewalls in order to prevent material unsuitable for students to be accessed. However, knowing that the internet is fluid, it should not be assumed that students cannot access inappropriate material. Any student that knowingly violates the acceptable use policy may have these privileges revoked. Violations include: Threatening, harassing, or obscene material Copyrighted material Plagiarized material Material protected by trade secret or blog posts Web posts, or discussion forum/replies posted to the Internet which violate federal or state law. What do I need to do to be able to use the county issued technology? Your parents must read the Student Code of Conduct that explains all of the BYOT expectations. Then, both student and parent must sign and return the agreement form. After that, a chromebook will be assigned for you to use for the duration of the school year. Fayette County Platform a. Fayette County is a Google District. We are also a one to one district and all of our students, first through twelfth grade, are issued Chromebooks. Our teachers use google classroom, google docs, google sheets, as well as google slides. In addition to this, Google makes it easy to create assessments that can be accessed through Google classroom. Teachers effectively use Google created newsletters as well as classroom websites to create school to parent communication. Through Google, classroom events, homework, and other pertinent announcements are readily accessible for both parents and students. Teachers can use google forms to create surveys as formative assessments. Some school cafeterias use google forms to report student lunch selections. Google is an easy platform to use as well as understand for administrators, teachers, parents, and students. 2. Accessibility for All Students a. In Fayette County, all students in first grade through twelfth grade receive a Chromebook. Even though all students have access to technology, they may not have access to the internet at home. This is mainly a problem in our Title I schools. These schools have actually purchased Kajeet for students that do not have access to internet from their homes. This creates equity and access for all students. 3. Grouping Students a. Small group instruction is considered a non-negotiable in math blocks for our elementary schools. Students will work independently and collaboratively during this time. The county has provided a computer adaptive program, Dreambox, to provide acceleration as well as interventions for individualized learning. Collaboration can also be used during small group time. Students are generally grouped based on formative assessments and can work together on projects based on their level of understanding. The county is also providing online activities, however, teachers will utilize hands on manipulatives through these activities. These activities have been written by teachers, and the digital learning specialist, along with the math instructional teacher have digitized these activities. Students are held accountable by sending their finished project through Google Classroom. 4. Math Apps a. Math Learning Center: Virtual Manipulatives for use at school and at home. b. Glencoe Virtual Manipulatives: Virtual Manipulatives for use at school and at home. c. Prodigy: Game based math program for grades first through twelfth. d.
