The purpose of this volume is to provide prospective philosophy graduate students and others with basic information about the opportunities in North America for professional training in philosophy. While this volume is a useful starting point for prospective graduate students, a comprehensive inquiry should also include consultation with advisors and people directly involved with programs of interest. The origins of the Guide to Graduate Programs in Philosophy lie in the initiative of the APA committee on the status and future of the profession under the chairmanship of Richard Schacht. His involvement with the 1992 edition created a standard for the “grad guide,” as it has come to be known, that has made it an important resource for the profession. The grad guide was previously published every other year in even years, with the last publication in 2002. But thanks to the leadership and initiative of Ed Casey, this important publication has been resurrected and revitalized. We anticipate that it will now be an online-only publication updated annually, with the APA soliciting the latest data from degree programs in each spring or summer for publication in fall. The information gathered for this publication includes basic information on each program as well as demographic data on its faculty and students, placement records, and information on teaching and fellowship opportunities within the program. Data on doctoral and terminal master’s programs are presented separately, when separate data was provided. When a department offers both doctoral and terminal master’s degree programs but did not provide distinct data for the two, all data is listed under the doctoral program. In addition to providing a data summary for each individual program, this publication also includes a table listing demographic data reported by all programs for quick comparison. Please also note that neither the APA nor this guide rank philosophy programs. Programs are listed in alphabetical order and the data is presented as provided, without commentary or analysis. Note that not all programs submitted data, and some programs submitted 2011 data but not 2012 data. The date of the data provided is listed for each program, and a list of programs that did not provide any data can be found at the end of this publication. If you wish to submit corrected, updated, or initial data for your program before the next annual update to this guide, please send an email to gradguide@apaonline.org. Please direct questions about individual program data to that specific program’s administrators. The APA wishes to thank those who took the time to provide information about graduate programs for the benefit of the philosophical community. We also offer our sincerest thanks to Ed Casey, Andrés Colapinto, Oli Stephano, Brian Irwin, Leslie Francis, David Schrader, and others who worked tirelessly to solicit and compile data to revive the Guide to Graduate Programs in Philosophy after it had languished for several years. Please direct general questions, comments, and suggestions for the 2013 edition of the Guide to Graduate Programs in Philosophy to gradguide@apaonline.org.
