2020 GUIDE DU VISITEUR Visitors’ Guide Château d’Harcourt ©Pierre Jeanson ais sous nos yeux la Normandie médiévale est avant tout un paysage monumental qui se déploie en tous lieux, de clochers en châteaux, d’abbayes en cathédrales, jusqu’au cœur des villes ou des villages préservés. Ce paysage garde le souvenir de l’ancien duché et des mondes normands de la mer du Nord à la Méditerranée. Il raconte une histoire que nos mémoires d’écoliers ont embellie des péripéties du roman ou du cinéma épique : iI y est question de guerriers venus de la mer, de barons voleurs et de princes conquérants, d’un roi au cœur de lion et de guerre de cent ans… Mais c’est aussi un pays d’art et d’architecture, de culture savante et de traditions populaires, de littérature chevaleresque et de légendes… ; tout ce qui contribue à la richesse d’une grande région entre terre et mer et nous ouvre la porte d’un beau voyage dans le temps. The time when the ‘Middle Ages’ was thought of as a dark and barbarous era is over. The medieval period may still be shrouded in the imaginary, and that fits well with the current mania for fantasy worlds and historical reconstructions. As we see things, medieval Normandy is however above all a landscape full of monuments, which are found everywhere, from clocktowers to castles, abbeys and cathedrals, and in the hearts of our uns- poilt towns and villages. This landscape is a constant reminder of the former Duchy and of Norman territory, which stretched from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It tells a story which our childhood me- mories have embellished with the twists and turns of a novel or epic cinema: a saga of warriors arriving by sea, of robber barons and conquering princes, of kings with the heart of a lion, or of wars lasting a hundred years… But this is also a land of art and architecture, of learned culture and popular traditions, of chivalrous lite- rature and of legends…; of everything that makes up the rich fabric of a great region situated between land and sea, and that opens the door to a wonderful journey back through time. Those four figures per- sonify the heroic side of medieval Normandy. But around the region, there are also many sites and works to discover that bear witness to Normandy’s major, eventful history, not least Mont Saint-Michel, the Bayeux Tapestry, Jumièges Abbey, Château Gaillard and the medieval hill town of Domfront. Découvrir le Moyen-Age en Normandie, c’est découvrir plus de 500 ans d’histoire, avec des invasions, des guerres, des personnages tels que Rollon, Guillaume le Conquérant, Richard Cœur de Lion ou encore Jeanne d’Arc… À eux quatre, ils personnifient la Normandie Médiévale en tant que figures héroïques. C’est aussi découvrir des sites témoins de cette riche et grande histoire normande parmi lesquels le Mont Saint-Michel, la Tapisserie de Bayeux, l’Abbaye de Jumièges, le Château Gaillard ou la Cité médiévale de Domfront… 5 HISTOIRE MÉDIÉVALE NORMANDE Traité de Saint- ĿĴļŅіņňŅі ŃŇĸє Charles le Simple accorde un territoire aux Vikings et à leur chef Rollon, baptisé Robert en 912. The Treaty of Saint- ĿĴļŅіņňŅі ŃŇĸєCharles the Simple grants territory to the Vikings and their chieftain Rollo, who was christened Robert in 912. ŅĴļŇųķĸĴŅļņє Henri III, roi d’Angleterre accepte l’hommage féodal pour ses possessions en France. La Normandie demeure directement dans la main du roi de France. Ļĸ ŅĸĴŇŌłĹĴŅļņє Henry III, King of England, accepts feudal tribute for his possessions in France. Normandy remains in the hands of the King of France. Bataille de ĴņŇļŁĺņє Guillaume de Normandie prend la couronne d’Angleterre. Ļĸ ĴŇŇĿĸłĹĴņŇļŁĺņє William the Conqueror takes the crown of England. ĴŇĴļĿĿĸķĸ ļŁĶĻĸĵŅĴŌє La couronne d’Angleterre et le Duché de Normandie sont alors réunifiés entre les mains de Henri Ier Beauclerc. The Battle of Tinchebray.
