Minilesson Pacing Guide The optimal minilesson is 15 minutes - Students ARE NOT to achieve mastery of the skill during the mini-lesson! Connection (0 – 2 minutes) Connect what the students will learn today to real life application and to the teaching point. Teaching Point (0 – 1 minute) T oday I want to teach you... - Unpack the significant words to better understanding. Teach (3 – 4 minutes) Can come in one of four methods: 1.) Demonstration 2.) Guided Practice 3.) Explanation with example 4.) Inquiry (Investigate together) Active Engagement (4 – 6 minutes) This is an opportunity to try the skill independently or in writing partners. - T eacher will coach students or gather examples to share when the turn and talk ends. Link (1 – 2 minutes) Channel your students to actually accomplish the task identified in the teaching point. Other Writing Workshop Components Once students leave the carpet area following the link, they will begin their independent work. Conferencing (3 – 7 minutes) See “Writing Conference Structure” guide. - The purpose of conferences is to offer in-depth independent instruction. The goal is to accelerate the student forward on the writing progression for the given genre. (Give an artifact) Strategy Groups (5 – 8 minutes) (6 students maximum) Using the On-Demand data, pull small group sessions to advance the students in an identified area of need or growth. - Identify the skill they demonstrated and the teaching point will be the next column on the rubric. Mid-Workshop Teach (2 – 5 minutes) (IMPORTANT) Voiceover or a demonstration of an essential skill to enhance the student’s writing performance. Share (3 – 8 minutes) Students will return to the carpet area. - The lesson of the day will identify how to use the share time. - The share could introduce a new skill or be a time when student exemplars are shared.
