SONICCOUTURE CROWD CHOIR USER GUIDE www.soniccouture.com email :customerservices@soniccouture.com INSTALLATION 1. KONTAKT 4 AND LATER Copy the entire “SC Crowdchoir” folder anywhere you like on your hard drive. Make sure you keep that folder structure as it is, so that the Kontakt instruments can find their samples and graphics. Kontakt Library Tab • Crowdchoir requires the full version of Kontakt, and as such, can’t be added to the main Libraries tab. Only Kontakt Player instruments can 'officially' be added to the Libraries tabs within Kontakt. • Instead, you have to load the .nki files via Kontakt's file browser ('Files' tab at the top left, or load with the 'Files' menu in the top middle.) • Unofficial Workaround: There is a way around this, however - and it's quite simple. Just copy the entire product folder into the main 'Kontakt Library' folder. You can find the location of this by clicking the small options ( cog icon) menu on the right hand side of the Kontakt library tab, and selecting 'Open containing folder'.Copy your libraries onto the top level of this, restart Kontakt, and you'll see them appear in that Tab. You can further organise them into sub-folders within this, but DO make sure to keep all the samples folders etc together in the original product folder, or you'll have loading issues. • (For Kontakt 5 you need to put your libraries one level further down, INSIDE the 'instruments' folder) 2. LOGIC EXS24 Copy the Crowdchoir.exs file to your Sampler Instruments folder. user/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments Keep the rest of the data (the Samples folder) somewhere safe on your hard drive. The first time you load an Instrument, your Mac may take a moment to find the waveforms it needs. After that, it will remember and load much more quickly. ABLETON LIVE 8.3 OR LATER Double click the SC-Crowd-Choir.alp file to install Crowdchoir to your Live library. You do not need to authorise this library to in your Ableton.com account. SONICCOUTURE CROWD CHOIR USER GUIDE www.soniccouture.com email :customerservices@soniccouture.com THE CROWDCHOIR PROJECT The 'Crowd-choir' was an idea for a crowd-sourced sampled instrument, partly inspired by the 10cc track 'I'm not in love', which famously featured a vocal pad sound created by painstakingly over-dubbing a single vocal note over and over again. We wondered if we could get hundreds of people all around the world to sing one note each from a 3 octave range - then layer these recordings in a sampler to create a unique vocal sound - a wash of different voices in different rooms in different countries. HOW IT WORKED We put up a web page which displayed a single note name - C1, B3, etc - and also played a guide tone to sing to, if required. Each user was provided SONICCOUTURE CROWD CHOIR USER GUIDE www.soniccouture.com email :customerservices@soniccouture.com with instructions on how best to record their note - which format, sample rate etc - and a web form by which they could upload the audio file along with their name and email address. Each participant was entered into a competition to win a desirable musical instrument, an Array Mbira, as well as offered a free downoad of the resulting instrument. THE RESULTS Over 1000 people contributed over a 3 month period - a fantastic success for the project, since when we started it we really had no idea if anyone would contribute at all. Most of those 1000 people recorded more than one note (and some contributed a lot), meaning that we ended up with slightly over 4000 different notes to build an instrument from. Most of the notes occurred in the middle of the C1 - C4 range, since people tended to sing the notes they found easiest. For example, while E2 has 206 voices, C4 only has 28. THE FINAL INSTRUMENT Of course, this was the real thrill of the whole project - finding out how the instrument would actually sound. Such an 'imaginary' instrument is only possible within a sampler, which is the strength of the entire concept. We were not trying to emulate something from the real world, but rather create something unique and human in the virtual world. You can judge for yourself how it sounds, either from the audio demos or by buying the instrument. But we think it worked very well, from a sonic perspective. We never intended it to sound like a natural choir; we expected it to sound very mellotron-like, as in the 10cc track. However, it still surprised us ; the richness of 1000 different voices singing into different microphones in 1000 different rooms adds a depth that would be hard to ahcive any other way. And it's interesting that the varying recording quality of the many submissions really doesn't matter at all in the end result - if anything it adds more character, but never degrades the sound. We'd like to say thanks to all who took part and made it such a unique success. A list of contributors can be found on the web page. On the front panel there are several controls, starting at the top left you see: • CROWD and DETUNE - This adjusts the density of the crowd and allows you to detune the added voices if CROWD is audible. • LEGATO and RANGE - This turns on a LEGATO function, which will be active if consecutive intervals are equal to or less than the number of semitones in RANGE. • ATTACK and RELEASE - These adjust the envelope behaviour. • VEL. - Adjusts the velocity sensitivity. • CUTOFF and RES - These adjust the low pass filter cutoff and resonance. • FEG and HPF - These adjust the envelope to filter cutoff depth and high pass filter cutoff respectively. • SPACE - This adjusts the amount of reverb, the type of which can be selected from the drop down menu. • WIDTH - This adjusts the stereo width of the sound.
