I was in Lancaster for a Level 3 football game, and I remember the town being empty and the sta- dium being filled with screaming fans. And after the game when I walked on the field and weeded through the crowd – what seemed like the entire town – to get my first interview, I realized just how big football is in Wisconsin. I became enthralled with having the opportunity to provide coverage for an event that hundreds of people keep an eye on. This will be my fifth season covering Verona football, and that feeling has not changed. I see the same faces year-after-year, and I see the excitement of the players, fans and media. I have covered Stoughton and Ore- gon a few times while I have been here as well, and it is the same there. Even when the ice rain is falling, the cool air is burning my fingers red and my hands shiver as I attempt to write the last play in my notebook, I notice that everyone at the stadium is into every snap. I have the privilege of seeing the side of the game many fans cannot experience. I lis- ten to the coaches and watch them figure out offenses and defenses. I watch the team leaders and upperclass- men rally the team when things go bad. I see the joy and the sadness that a win or a loss can bring or when a senior realizes this might be his last game. And while sometimes I wish I was on a warm beach somewhere while I try to take photos without feeling in my fingers, every season brings me the realization that there really aren’t many other places I would rath- er be while working on a Friday night in the fall. This upcoming season should be fun for the players, the fans, the coaches, the vol- unteers, the parents and the media, and I am excited to be in the middle of the circus for another season. Anthony Iozzo has been covering prep sports for eight years and Verona Area High School football for five. Follow @UNG_AIozzo on Twitter for updates, photos and news on Verona, Stoughton and Oregon football, as well as the rest of the high school prep sports seasons this fall. Too many memories to remember entering 11th season Jeremy Jones Sports editor As a prep sports editor I have enjoyed every minute covering high school sports the past 12 years, including the past 11 sea- sons at Unified Newspa- per Group. After all that time, however, the details tend to get a little fuzzy from time-to-time. Trying to remember which season the Oregon Panthers football pro- gram advance onto the WIAA Division 2 Level 4 playoff game, for exam- ple, sends me to the archives. I was never good with dates, thankfully mnemonics such as “in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” helped me through high school and college history courses. I’ve found it a little more difficult to come up with such helpful little turns of phrase to access my mental database of more than a decades worth of memories over my time covering Oregon, Stoughton and Verona Area High Schools, however. But really high school athletics, much like history, is about a lot more than simply remembering dates. The story of how a team reached the state title game, for example, is often more interesting than how far the team actually advanced. For local high school football teams, that journey began under the Friday Night lights earlier this month and will continue well into October before 14 teams from across the state come together Nov. 20-21 to via for seven WIAA state titles. Standing on the sidelines every Friday night from now until at least mid-October, there will most likely come a time when I, like many of us, will think about being somewhere else. Maybe because of rain or snow, mosqui- toes or simply what the scoreboard reads for your favorite team, it’s human nature for our minds to wonder. As I look back on my experience playing and covering prep sports, it’s the little things, not the final scores, that I remember the most vividly. New memories and stories I am look- ing forward to covering this season include Stoughton High School as it tries to end a 15-year playoff drought, as well as Oregon head coach Dan Kissling as he continues to try and to rebuild the Panthers’ football pro- gram which has gone a combined 6-30 over the past four seasons. Jeremy Jones has been covering prep sports for 12 years, including the past 11 seasons at Unified Newspaper Group following Oregon, Stoughton and Verona. For the first time since 2003, the Wildcats found themselves at home during the opening week of the playoffs. But instead of accepting that finish, the coaching staff, led by head coach Dave Richardson, reevalu- ated the entire program from uploads/Geographie/ 2014-football-guide.pdf
