This is it, man.” “This is the show where we come out and we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time, because, honestly, I don’t know when we’re gonna do it again and this is the perfect place to do it, right now, tonight.” Sad times for Foo Fighters fans? Grooveguide.co.nz | 5 GET READY FOR SUMMER: R&V’S SOUNDCHECK HAS A LINE-UP TO HAVE YOU IN THE CAR AND WAITING TO ROADTRIP. The fabulous crew that bring you Rhythm & Vines (R&V), the annual New Year’s party in Gisborne, are teaming up with masters the Ambient Group for the exciting live music event, Soundcheck. Topping the bill will be British Electronic act Nero (live), dubstep producer/DJ Rusko and rising UK singer-songwriter and record producer Labrinth, all supported by local mischief makers Home Brew. You’ll know about Nero. They’ve done Aotearoa several times, gaining a stupendous rep as the go-to masters. Back in 2010, ‘Electron’ was pumping the stage and it still goes off. You may have caught them at the final Big Day Out earlier this year, rockin’ up a storm in the Boiler Room. Normally the crew’ll do a DJ set, but this time it’s Nero themselves performing atop a huge stack of speakers/TVs/cassettes and other 8bit generation styled icons, mixing visuals and sound of mammoth proportions! They’ll rope in vocalist Alana and the lads (Joseph and Dan) are planning some Daft Punk-esque neon lit visors for a sartorial spurge. Then there is Rusko, the producer behind Britney Spears, the collaborator with Cypress Hill and the creator of more club air time than you’d care to mention. Rusko aka Christopher Mercer, dubstep extraordinaire, hails from Leeds and has caught the plane over before, playing the ASB Showgrounds back in early 2011. Apparently the gig was closed down for the use of “excessive bass”! With his floppy Mohawk flying around as he bounces on stage with an explosion of energy, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
