This guide provides information on how to perform maintenance on your lighting systems. Lighting Maintenance Guide Proper maintenance is essential to high quality and efficient lighting. Even in areas where air is well filtered, enough dirt can accumulate on lamps, louvers, and reflectors to reduce lighting levels significantly. Without regular maintenance, light levels can fall by more than 50% in 2-3 years and energy costs may increase over time. Eventually, the reduction in lighting levels will affect the appearance of your space and the productivity, comfort, and safety of occupants. Complete the following: 1. Turn off any lights you will be cleaning and wait until they cool down. Wear white cotton gloves to help protect surfaces from fingerprints. 2. Clean bulbs and fixtures with a damp cotton cloth or a soft-bristled anti-static brush. A mild detergent may be needed. If static electricity is a problem, add a small amount of anti-static solution to the rinse water (laundry fabric softener is an inexpensive alternative). 3. Parabolic fixtures and specular surfaces should be removed and dipped in mild detergent solution, and then air-dried. 4. Walls, ceilings, and other lit surfaces should also be cleaned. Their reflection of light can be almost as important as the fixtures themselves. 5. Check that occupancy and brightness sensors are operating properly, if applicable. 6.
