FACET offers all of our students a comfortable environment in which to explore new ideas and develop skills either through our activity sessions or accredited training courses. Linda Ingram CEO 5 4 Our Students So, what can we offer? We have approximately 120 students attending our training facility each week, all of whom are adults with varying learning disabilities living in the Fenland area. Some of our students also have physical disabilities, or suffer sensory impairment, mental health problems, various forms of autism or head injury victims. Our aim is to help them reach their full potential in life and to live comfortably and productively within the community. We want to make things as easy and stress free as possible right from day 1 of transitioning to FACET as a new student & we think the key to this is consistency. Therefore, the full process from the very first phone call of enquiry, through to guided tours of the building for both families and the student themself is conducted by the registered manager. This consistency and working with one familiar face throughout works wonders to help a seamless and easy to settle in way of life to joining us at FACET. We provide over 30 different programmes every day of the week, Monday – Friday. This document includes just a sample of the range of programmes on offer. Horticulture Our nursery is equipped to commercial standards, students can gain practical experience in all the processes involved with growing/selling plants, as well as on-site landscaping work. We produce bedding plants, shrubs and perennials etc. We sell our plants to members of the local public through our main site and our charity shop, so please come and see us. Retail FACET has its own mini empire of charity shops with ‘FACET Homes and Gardens’ on the High Street in March town centre. Most recently we have also added a fantastic shop in Whittlesey too. Within these shops students work alongside our staff team learning the necessary skills needed to work within a retail environment. Having such facilities available to us really makes us stand out from the others and enables our students to take in our registered qualifications in retail and employability offering them a great chance to showcase their progress in a real-life work situation. We take donated goods, complete house clearances, sell our own products and provide a furniture and collection service. Catering & Baking Club At FACET we have not one but two large training kitchens where our students develop the skills necessary to increase their levels of independence, alongside preparing and providing healthy tuck-shop snacks and making hot lunches for many of our staff and students. At a different level we offer a baking club, which can help enhance students’ independent living skills, help them feel part of a team or serve as a real beginner’s guide to finding your way around a kitchen. 5* Hygiene FACET is proud that we are able to offer our new Gateway qualification in a top standard kitchen too! Our kitchens have been awarded the highest possible 5 stars for 3 successive years by the food standard agency for food hygiene. Arts & Crafts Our Art room is full of life, colours and creates an amazing atmosphere that needs to be seen to be believed! Within this spacious, naturally light and airy room student can explore their creative side and senses whilst learning new skills and techniques. Here our students produce paintings, greeting cards, mosaics, encaustic art and even jewellery some of which is sold in our shop, at craft fairs and on our open days. Many of these products are made from recycled materials. Life Skills We understand not all skills are learnt in a classroom so we endeavour to provide a range of training that is learnt out in the community by working with the many fabulous organisations which support us as partners. This help allows FACET students to live more independently by working on money skills, washing, cooking, personal care and presentation and how to understand relationships both professional and personal. Break times at FACET are equally useful as our 2 large halls help encourage friendships and build up long lasting meaningful social relationships. With snacks available to buy and social spaces inside and out there’s something for everyone’s social needs and tastes. Literacy & Numeracy Upon arrival at FACET, we take the time to ensure students are offered appropriate sessions suited to the individuals’ abilities. This allows us to complete an individual learning plan based around their goals, hopes and interests. By taking this approach the student receives the most suitable scheme of work to help them progress. Some of the work is done using our state-of-the- art SMART Board, allowing people of any ability to take part in the sessions and learn in an interactive and fun way. Information Technology Technology is the future! which is why at FACET we ensure our IT suit is always up and running. Our computers are equipped with a wide range of specially adapted programmes to suit the most precise needs of our students. Recently we have brought in a twist on our traditional IT sessions by introducing an Ebay class, in this exciting session students are able to pick products from our charity shops, market, photograph and help in the selling of these products. This is another great opportunity for FACET students to develop skills to help achieve real life working situation. The expressive arts We run weekly music and drama sessions, which have proved incredibly popular. They provide a fantastic window for self-expression for our students. We often stage productions for parents and carers as well as taking some shows out to the local community to schools and residential homes. Sports & Leisure Competitive or just for fun? You can take your pick at FACET. Take part in the excitement and competition of being part of the “Par Ability League” throughout the football season pitting your skills against other teams across Cambridgeshire, or have fun and fitness with our wide range of sports equipment. Multi-sports sessions take place both inside and outside at FACET, as well as being offered the chance to part in many community golf and fun sports days throughout the year. We also have a healthy walks group once a week during the summer which visits a range of locations. Community Projects From rejuvenating eyesore areas in the local community with our gardening squad to singing at care homes and Christmas light switch on FACET does it all. At FACET we are real believers in community spirit and definitely don’t go with the flow when it comes to being a charity as we like to give back too. FACET is a really recognisable organisation uploads/Ingenierie_Lourd/ facet-student-guide.pdf
