Because of limitations of cost we are not able to provide you with full working copies of the software on the CD. You need the full working versions and training to enable you to use these products quickly and efficiently, so an appreciation of the possibilities, the problems and benefits are all that is looked for here. The CD has been kindly supplied by Masterbill Micro Systems Ltd, but this is by no means a recommendation that you should purchase this software. That decision must be made by you or your company after a full review of the available products, costs and support. If you wish to find out more about their products, please contact Masterbill direct. This guide is intended to direct you through the demonstrations and packages that are appropriate for this module. The CD contains further examples of Masterbill products which you may wish to view. The cost planning software, for example, may be of interest when you are studying this subject during another module. 2 Getting started To view the CD you need access to a computer with a CD ROM drive. Minimum hard disc space is required for a Flash viewer to be installed if you do not already have it. so that you can view the presentations. If you wish to download trial versions of some of the software, then more capacity will be necessary. It is recommended that you do not try to work through this CD until you have studied all the papers in the module. You need to be able to understand the principles of measurement, billing and pricing in order to understand what the software is trying to achieve. Viewing the demonstrations will take about two hours, and a similar amount of time will be appropriate to practise each of the separate software packages. Insert the CD into the appropriate drive on your computer. It should automatically load. If you are not successful the first time, remove it and try again. If you are still having problems, then go to Start and Run and type in the address of the drive you are using (eg ‘d’), and then press the return key. A list of the files on the CD will appear. Click on readme.txt for further instructions. After reading the software agreement licence you should click on OK. It is recommended that you view the demonstrations before trying the trial versions of the software. 3 3 Viewing demonstrations Click video tours on the menu icon and a screen will appear giving you a list of the video tours available. To view the demonstrations you may need to install the Flash viewer. The on-screen instructions for this are quite clear. You may also wish to install the Adobe Acrobat reader if you do not already have one. This will enable you to view and print brochures. You should now be in a position to view the demonstrations. For our purposes we are only going to work through Measurement tools using QS Cad, BQ production and Estimating. Place the cursor over the relevant icon and click to continue with the presentation. The video will be shown using your Internet Browser. If at any time you wish to stop the viewing, you can use the controls or close your browser window; this will return you to the main screen. While you are working through the presentations, try to understand what is happening and why. Make a comparison with the process you would be following if you were undertaking these tasks using a traditional manual approach. 3.1 Measurement We are going to look through the measurement tools first. Click on the relevant icon to watch the QS Cad Basic video tour. You can come back and look at the drainage and site works demonstrations later. You should now have video console on your screen that we will work through. There are navigation headings on the left of the screen which you can use to jump to a particular section. You can also stop, play, rewind and fast forward the video, if required. When you have worked through the video tour return to the CD menu. It will be apparent that any drawings can be converted for use with this software. You will of course need the facility to scan a drawing into a computer if it has not been created using a computer aided design package. Note, before you can start measurement you need to tell the computer what scale the drawing is. This is called calibration. Masterbill QS Cad works with drawings separated into layers. This is purely a record of what has been measured for one item. For example, the floor finishes will be on one layer and the ceiling finishes on another. You could identify areas of finishes and lengths of skirting on one layer. The point of measuring using software such as QS Cad is that it enables you to transfer a set of dimensions to bill preparation, estimating or cost planning software. The dimensions are relatively quick to produce once you become proficient with the software. Additions and deductions are easily identified. Drainage schedules are rapidly produced and complex levelling or the measurement of irregular areas is accurately carried out. Coloured up plans can also be produced of what has been measured and where, and these provide a useful record for post-contract variations. When viewing the drawings demonstration, you will be shown how to move around the screen and to zoom in and out. Cad drawings are often drawn at full size and plans do not fit on a computer screen, so you may need to use the panning tools to assist in navigating around the drawing. When measuring lengths around a room for skirtings, a useful feature of this software is that you can insert a height as a multiplier and the wall area will be calculated. You can now download the trial version of QS Cad and work through this while it is fresh in your mind, or you can go on to view the other demonstrations and then download the trial versions. 4 There is a video tutorial for the QSCad trial version and a Tutorial document for you to work through. Note: The QSCad trial version only lasts for 30 days from installation, it is recommended that you do not install this until you are ready to use it. 3.2 Bills of Quantities production Return to the Video Tours section of the CD menu and click the relevant icon for the Masterbill Elite BQ production video. Retrieving descriptions from a library is now standard practice for bill production, and having the flexibility to use rogue items to create your own descriptions is important. Dimensions are entered in a typical traditional way, and the practice of entering three figures for volumes, two for areas etc is recommended. Again, work through this section trying to compare the computer approach with the traditional. Those of you who have had to produce a large bill manually will appreciate the complexities of abstracting and editing the bill before final typing and editing can take place. Pricing the bill as a pre-tender estimate requires a long manual approach with careful checking. Analysing the bills after production can also be time-consuming and sometimes impossible. With a computer these tasks have been made quick, easy and practical. As QS fees for bill production have been decreasing due to competition, the need to make the process as quick and efficient as possible has led to an increase in the use of the computer. When you have completed this section, return to the CD menu. There is no trial version of this available, but the process followed is very similar to that used for the EstimatorPro package. 4 QS Cad trial version Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the trial version. When completed, go to Start, Programs, Masterbill and click on QS Cad v3 P7 trial. The drawing used for this trial is a simple housing estate of eight houses. The tutorial will not take you through all of the functions of QS Cad, but you are free to practise with it as you wish. In the trial version you can also import up to four drawings and set up a project, identifying any phases or groupings that you wish. 5 EstimatorPro trial version Install the trial version from the Trial Versions section. Place the cursor over EstimatorPro and left-click. The installation will take a few minutes. Again go to Start, Programs and then click on Laxtons and then EstimatorPro to start the uploads/Litterature/ qs-cd-guide.pdf
