CET Guide Rubrics from the syllabus: 1. Demonstrated understanding of reading material. a. correctly identifies Genre, Audience and Purpose of your chosen text. b. Note that there can be different answers – it depends on if your justifications make sense. 2. Ability to analyse texts critically. a. Justifies your GAP choices with appropriate features. b. Be able to link specific feature(s) with your GAP and explain the effects of that feature. c. Features are highly relevant – choosing to explain key features instead of other less relevant/less important ones. d. Each feature fully supported by examples. 3. Ability of signal source use. a. Basically introduce your examples naturally with appropriate reporting verbs/grammar structure/etc. when necessary. b. No need to provide external sources or a reference list. 4. Language use. a. Basically your English in your assignment. Introduction ~100 words - Provide a very brief summary of what your chosen text is about (1-2 sentences) o Example: ….text one provides five principles of how students can effectively utilize PowerPoint to establish professionalism in presentations…. - Provide an overview of your text’s GAP. o Example: …As a case study in research writing, this text seems to target professionals working in the education sector and serves the purpose of… - Summarize one or two key recurring features of your chosen text. o Example: …the text appears to be quite formal… - Signal that you are going to analyse your GAP further in your essay (just like what you will do in a typical introduction). o Example: In the following, genre, intended audience, and purpose of the text would be further examined and discussed. GAP Analysis ~550 words - Analyse the text’s GAP in any order. - You can provide a quick summary of your analysis at the beginning if you wish so. Or, you can jump straight into the features. - Analyse key features. o Some features include: structure, title, tense, use of visuals, grammar, use of words/phrases, context clues (the content), first/second/third person, active/passive, direct/indirect address, citations/reference list, style, pronouns, hedging, nominalization….etc. There are a lot more features available and this here is not an exhaustive list! - Provide examples with each key feature you have identified. o “The overall structure is very formally constructed and follows the rules of a typical research paper, containing sections such as Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion.” < a good justification for the Genre. - Only identify KEY features – don’t try and include everything. - There is NO NEED to include citations from outside sources. Feel free to do your own research on the language features of your text, but there is no need to cite a source or add a reference list. - Make sure your justifications make sense! o “This text seems to target professionals and students alike. With an analytical, factual, and evidence-based style of writing, the text is able to establish credibility for academic use. For example………the sentence here is able to…..Meanwhile, students are also a potential audience since specialized terminologies are often neglected…..For example, the use of “words” instead of “lexis”…. < makes sense. A good justification for the target audience. o “Hu and Cao (2011) also assert that graphics that are related to the topic may be used to explain an idea further. In the text, photos of children and their teachers are shown to empathize with the concepts being discussed.” < doesn’t make sense. What concepts are being discussed? How does a photo of children and teacher explain an idea? o “the objective of the language used is to shed light on other schools and children of the same age.” < doesn’t make sense. How does objective language “shed light” on other schools? Also, examples? o “The author is urging the teacher to help in creating global citizens by nurturing young minds. The author is very specific that he is addressing the school team with his choice of words like “grade 5 teacher”. According to Bakers (2020), the author may directly mention the audience. In this case, the author mentions teachers and students” < doesn’t make sense. How does a direct address lead to the purpose of “urging teachers to help in creating global citizens”? Also the citation does not add any value or meaning. o “this text establishes professionalism in front of scholarly readers using evidences and research findings while providing insights to teachers working in the education sector using understandable vocabularies and organized bullet points of pedagogical principles.” < makes sense. A good justification to the purpose of the text, which is to raise the need of educating students the effective use of technology in classrooms. Conclusion - ~100 words - Basically just summarize your GAP again and your key findings. Just like how you would write a conclusion for any essay – paraphrase your whole essay into one paragraph. Other things to pay attention to: - Read the assignment instructions carefully. - Word count is 750 words +-10%. So upper limit is 825. There is no “lower limit”, technically speaking, because if you are expecting a good essay, you should be writing around 750 words. - 825 is the absolute maximum. I will NOT read anything past that limit and that might have an impact on your grades due to missed content. - Titles don’t count, but please don’t write a sentence-long subtitle. I won’t count stuff like “Introduction” or “Genre of the text”. - Remember to proofread your work. Make sure it is free of language errors. - Remember to include examples for EVERY language feature you have identified. If you have mentioned it, then include an example. - A VERY serious note to everyone: DO NOT copy ANYTHING from the Samples I have shown you, whether sample CET or simply a sample sentence. Students are often caught copying the sample – not word to word, but copying their ideas (so basically the analysis ideas and justifications are exactly the same as the samples). You will get into VERY SERIOUS TROUBLE if you are caught copying anything. You have been warned. - Of course, you can use the language features I have shown you in the PPTs in your analysis. I trust that you have common sense in what you can use and what you can’t use. uploads/Management/ b-no-need-to-provide-external-sources-or-a-reference-list.pdf
