Welcome to New York Dear Rutgers International Students, Thanks for joining our trip to New York City! New York City comprises the central island of Manhattan and the four outer boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan, to many, is New York; certainly, this is where you’re likely to stay and spend most of your time. Though you could spend weeks here and still barely scratch the surface, there are some key attractions and pleasures that you won’t want to miss. These include artsy concentrations of SoHo and the East and West villages. Of course, there is also the celebrated architecture of Midtown and the Financial District, as well as many fabulous museums. In between sightseeing, you can eat just about anything, at any time, cooked in any style; you can drink in any kind of company; and enjoy any number of obscure movies. 2 Times Square This globally famous square in Midtown Manhattan, New York City is formed by the intersection of Seventh Avenue, 42nd Street, and Broadway. Featuring bright billboards and advertisements and being the hub of the Broadway Theater District, it is one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections. It is also known as the Crossroads of the World. Since 1907, it has become the symbolic place where millions of visitors appreciate the annual Ball Drop one every New Year’s Eve. Brooklyn Bridge Built in 1883, it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed in the world. Spanning 1,595.5 feet (486.3m) across the East River, it connects Manhatten and Brooklyn. Upon its completion, it was considered as the eighth wonder of the world following the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Since its opening, it has become an icon of New York City and one of the best places to appreciate the scenic skyline of New York skyscrapers. Wall Street This is a 0.7-mile-long narrow street running eight blocks in the Financial District of lower Manhattan. Over time, the term has become a symbol for the financial markets of the United States as a whole. Anchored by Wall Street, New York City has been called the leading financial center of the world. It is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. The Charging Bull, sometimes called the Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull, is a bronze sculpture located in Bowling Green Park and is also a symbol for Wall Street. Empire State Building This 102-story skyscraper is located in Midtown Manhattan. As an American cultural icon and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, it stood as the world's tallest building from 1931 to 1970 and is now fifth-tallest building in the United States. Visitors are able to see up to five states from observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floor. A race up the stairs to the 86th floor is held annually since 1978, and participants have to climb a total of 1,576 steps. The Empire State Building has also become a popular place for celebrations of wedding and Valentine’s day since 1994. Statue of Liberty This famous icon of freedom and of the United States is a copper statue on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was built by French architecture Gustave Eiffel, the same person who built the Paris symbol Eiffel Tower. It was dedicated on in 1886 as a gift to the United States from the people of France. It is a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tablet upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. 3 Central Park It is an urban park in central Manhattan. Featuring woods, lakes, grassland, tennis courts, art galleries and many more, it is not only the entertainment location for New Yorkers but also a famous scenic spot for worldwide visitors. The Fifth Avenue Evoking an image of wealth and prosperity, the Fifth Avenue is a major thoroughfare going through the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It is considered among the most expensive and best shopping streets in the world. It originates at Washington Square Park, runs northwards through the heart of Midtown, along the eastern side of Central Park, and terminates at the Harlem River. Brodaway Broadway is actually the name of a boulevard running north to south through Manhattan. Up to 40 professional theaters with 500 or more seats are located along the Broadway. Being a birthplace of American dramas and musicals, Broadway has thus become a synonym for dramas and musicals of the best in the world. Metropolitan Museum of Art Established in 1870, it is now the largest art museum in US and among the largest and most visited art museums in the world. It permanently collects more than two millions works, divided among seventeen departments, including paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, costumes, and accessories by masters from every corner of the world. There is also a much smaller second location at The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan that features medieval art.. American Museum of Natural History Located in park-like grounds across the street from Central Park, in Upper West Side of Manhattan, it is one of the largest museums in the world. It comprises 27 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library. Its collections contain over 32 million specimens of plants, humans, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, and human cultural artifacts. 4 Travel Tips: Safety is first Keep phone on Don’t carry large amounts of cash NYC Subway Safety When waiting for a train, stand far away from the edge of the subway platform, especially when trains are entering or leaving the station. Once the train pulls into the station, avoid empty cars. While on the train don't engage in verbal exchanges with aggressive riders, who may accuse others of anything from pushing to taking up too much space. NYC Taxi Safety Don’t Travel in Unmarked NY Taxi Cabs: Commonly referred to as "Gypsy Cabs," these unmarked NYC taxi cabs are usually non- metered, non-insured and non- licensed. Avoid a rip-off - or something worse - by denying a trip in these unmarked NY taxi cabs. Always Tip: Avoid an unwanted confrontation with a NYC taxi cab driver by tipping. After all - it's the right thing to do. Other tips: Avoid drawing attention to yourself as a tourist: don't stand on street corners looking at maps and do your best to walk confidently, as this will deter many criminals.
