Let’s lace ‘em up and have at it. Bring on Rochester’s toughest tests. NO. 12, SOLDIERS FIELD GC The familiar short, tree-lined layout plays to a mere 5,823 yards from the back tees. Not where you’d expect to find one of the longest par fours around, but No. 12 at Soldiers fits the bill. Playing to 442 yards, golfers hit their tee shots right along Broadway south. Guarding against OB left, most tee shots wander into the trees on the right. The southerly summer wind makes No. 12 play even longer. Very old school small green for a 440-plus-yard hole. NO. 17, EASTWOOD GC Scorecard says 203 yards from back tee, but plays more like 240 yards straight up a mountain. One of hardest par 3s in Minnesota. Don’t get enough height on your tee ball and trees halfway up the hill on the right will grab your ball, maybe kick it into a bunker in the hillside just for fun. Pull or hook your tee shot and well, double bogey is the best you’ll do. As if the 200-plus yard straight uphill tee shot isn’t enough of a challenge for any golfer, the green is the most diabolical at Eastwood. Huge back to front slope creates very challenging long lag putts, as well as very tricky chips and pitches. Make a par 3 here and you’ve earned the right to enjoy that post round beer or soda. NO. 6, NORTHERN HILLS GC The most intimidating tee shot in Rochester. Used to look out at a rutted gravel road and a few rooftops. Now it's high-speed traffic and an endless sea of homes in northwest Rochester. Golfers must guard against drifting right off the tee and finding the water, which absolutely gobbles golf balls. Bail too far left and you’re dancing with the chain link O.B. and a re-tee. Slicers must hang their tee shot out over the O.B. fence and drift it back toward the water. Gulp. Things don’t get any easier up around the smallish elevated green. Chipping from over the green … call Phil Mickelson. Another factor making this hole ever more challenging is how all the trees have mushroomed larger over the past 30 years. Lots of limbs waiting to swat down your second or third shot here. Birdies can be had, but par is a good score on this 500 yard sharp dogleg right par 5. NO. 12, WILLOW CREEK GC Only 364 yards from the back tees, golfers are faced with a creek running the length of this par four on the left and a mountain side of trees and O.B. to the right. If there is one tree Rochester golfers would love to chainsaw down, it would be the huge overhanging tree on the right side of the 12th fairway at Willow Creek. Kind of like Wilt Chamberlain sitting out there swatting away nice looking drives. Navigate past Wilt and avoid the creek on the left and you still have to contend with the devilish green that slopes very hard back right to front left. Now most all the trees are gone, even the monstrously huge tree that protected the front right of the green at the crest of the hill. Over/under on the number of cuss words that tree induced the past 50 years ... let’s go with 10 million. A conservative estimate. But don’t be thinking the home hole at RGCC is a piece of cake now. Anything but. Severe sloped lies in the fairway still confound, while new bunkers on the left side of the fairway torment you from the tee. One final truth about taking down tons of trees on golf courses: It makes for better grass growing conditions. More sunlight/air movement = very good. The 18th green at RGCC was already notoriously challenging, and it's getting faster/firmer now. If the pin is on the left side of the green, pray. Pray hard. If you 3 or 4 putt, commence to the beautiful bar and grill, order your favorite beverage, then gaze out on the 18th green and plot your strategy for next time. No. 18 at RGCC will be waiting. NO. 9, OAK SUMMIT GC The signature hole at Oak Summit and a monster par 3. It measures 222 yards from the back tee, and plays over a valley of trees on the right and left. Most tee shots come up short. Now you’ve got a pitch straight uphill to a green with lots of break. Lots of doubles and triple bogies here. In truth this very difficult hole plays like a short par 4. NO. 15, MAPLE VALLEY GC Number 15 at MVGC requires maximum control. The Root River awaits all the way up the right, but be careful of the pond on the left off the tee on this 481-yard par five. I’m guessing close to a million golf balls have splashed into this pond since Maple Valley opened for play in 1964. The green is tucked around and behind overhanging trees left of the green. Don’t mess with these trees. They eat approach shots. NO. 15, ROCHESTER GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB One of the most storied and revered par fours in the state of Minnesota. Quite different now since almost all the trees on the right side have come down, but the genius of the hole has always been its subtlety. Have to avoid left off the tee. The approach shot must be calculated carefully. Do not go flag hunting if the pin is on left of the green. Miss left and well ... nice knowing you. Bail out your approach shot to the right and you’re going to wish you had a 70-degree sand wedge. Even so, you’re still making bogey. NO. 16, SOMERBY GOLF CLUB My vote for the hardest hole in Rochester golf. At 454 yards from the back tee, this par four plays even longer into a south wind. A marsh cuts along the length of the hole on the left. Pull or hook and you’re wet. Don’t go too far right or you’ll tangle with Somerby’s infamous rough. The two level green really makes the hole.
