WEDNESDAY 17 septembeR 2014 - 6PM Most important scandinavian auction in Paris Success of Peder Moos’s private interior Press Release PIASA 118 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré 75008 Paris PRESS and COMMUNICATION Cécile Demtchenko Woringer T +33 1 53 34 12 95 – M +33 6 38 93 44 15 c.demtchenko@piasa.fr 2 Design Sale brings €3.5m (premium included) – nearly 80% of lots sold PIASA inaugurated their new premises at 118 rue du Faubourg-St-Honoré on Wednesday 17 September, with a sale devoted to one of the firm’s specialist themes, Scandinavian v. American Design, and to the personal furniture collection of Peder Moos, which also enjoyed great success. Personal Collection of PEDER MOOS (1906-91) Over sixty unique works by Danish designer Peder Moos from his personal collection, were consigned by his descendants and came fresh to the market. Top price of €124,540 went to a table-bookcase or cabinet de curiosités (lot 6), with other highlights including an elegant desk in walnut, maple and boxwood, dated 1944, at €74,940 (lot 8); a Minimalist walnut coat-hanger and matching hook at €26,580 (lot 18, est. €6000-8000); and a box and walnut sofa at €56,340 (lot 5). PIASA now holds the leading prices obtained at auction for this pioneer of Scandinavian Design. SCANDINAVIAN v. AMERICAN DESIGN The second part of the sale, comprising nearly 220 lots, featured leading names of Scandinavian and American Design. An ensemble of ceramics by Axel Johannes Salto yielded exceptional results, including €217,540 for a glazed stoneware vase (lot 86). Fierce bidding both in the room and on the phone made this the second-highest price ever obtained for a work by Salto worldwide. His bulbous Fruit vase, meanwhile, took €105,940 (lot 95, est. €20,000-30,000). The sale’s top price was €223,740 for an Oscar Nilsson ebony and pearwood library table (lot 146, est. €70,000-90,000) – a world record price for the artist. One of Finn Juhl’s iconic teak and leather Chieftain armchairs, meanwhile, fetched €174,140 (lot 147). The radical appearance and high-quality finish of works by Axel Einar Hjorth typify the innovative talent of early 20th century Design pioneers, and helped forge the reputation of Scandinavian Design. Such furniture rarely comes on the market, and prompted tremendous excitement in the saleroom – with an oak and leather desk climbing to €56,340 (lot 77) and a Sandhamm pinewood cupboard, with wrought iron mounts, to €42,700 (lot 78). 3 In the words of PIASA Vice-President & Chief Executive Frédéric Chambre: ‘Thanks to a high-quality selection of objects and the renewed confidence of French and international collectors, PIASA were able to set a new record for a sale of Scandinavian Design in Paris.’ (Results including premium) Top lots > Lot 146 Oscar Nilsson €223,740 / $288,830 > Lot 86 Axel Johannes Salto €217,540 / $280 830 > Lot 147 Finn Juhl €174,140 / $224,830 > Lot 6 Peder Moos €124,540 / $160,770 > Lot 95 Axel Johannes Salto €105,940 / $136,760 > Lot 144 Jorgen Berg €74,940 / $96,740 > Lot 212 Poul Kjœrholm €66,260 / $85,520 4 Peder Moos (1906-1991) Cabinet de curiosité, 1956 Palissandre- Pièce unique H 162 x L 54 x P 43 cm Provenance : Collection personnelle de l’artiste, conservé dans la famille par descendance Est. 100 000 / 150 000 € Vendu 124 540 € - Lot 6 5 Peder Moos (1906-1991) Bureau Noyer et sycomore Signé dans le tiroir de droite Date de création : 1948 H 70,5 x L 122,5 x P 70 cm Est. 55 000 / 65 000 € Vendu 74 940 € - Lot 8 6 Peder Moos (1906-1991) Porte-manteau « Cintre » Noyer Signé et daté sur la patère Date de création : 1948 H 28 × L 49 cm ; cintre : H 14 × L 49 cm Provenance : Collection personnelle de l’artiste, conservé dans la famille par descendance Est. 6 000 / 9 000 € Vendu 26 580 € - Lot 18 7 Axel Johannes salto (1889-1961) Vase Grès émaillé Édition Royal Copenhagen Signé et marque de l’éditeur Date de création : 1945 H 26 × Ø 34 cm Est. 40 000 / 60 000 € Vendu 217 540 € - Lot 86 8 Oscar Nilsson (attribué à) Library Table Bureau ou table Ébène et poirier Édition Hjalmar Jackson Date de création : vers 1930 H 74,5 × L 189 × P 70 cm Bibliographie : Tidskrift för Snickerioch Möbelkonst år, 1934 Est. 70 000 / 90 000 € Vendu 223 740 € - Lot 146 Record mondial pour cet artiste 9 Finn Juhl (1912-1989) Chieftain Fauteuil Teck et cuir Édition Niels Vodder Date de création : vers 1949 H 95 × L 105 × P 85 cm Bibliographie : Finn Juhl : Furniture, Architecture, Applied art/a biography, Esbjøorn Hiort, The danish architectural Press, 1990, p. 41 Est. 80 000 / 120 000 € Vendu 174 140 € - Lot 147 10 Jørgen Berg Cabinet Palissandre et bois noirci Date de création : vers 1970 H 141 × L 93 × 41,5 cm Est. 50 000 / 70 000 € Vendu 79 940 € - Lot 144 11 Axel Einar Hjorth (1888-1959) Funkis Bureau et chaise Chêne et cuir Édition Nordiska Kompaniet Plaque métalique R35325-C MÖB Date de création : vers 1930 Bureau : H 75 × 150 × 55 cm Chaise : H 99 × L 57 × P 52,5 cm Exposition : Stockholm exhibition, 1930 Est. 40 000 / 60 000 € Vendu 56 340 € - Lot 77 12 Design Department Cédric Morisset François Épin Cindy Chanthavong DESIGN AUCTION SCHEDULE > Tuesday 8 October - 6pm PIERRE SABATIER AGAINST DONT COLLECTION PRIVÉE ART AND CRAFT > Tuesday 28 October VERRERIES ITALIENNES DE DEUX COLLECTIONS PRIVÉES > Monday 27 October - 6pm PROTEST !
