Here are a few choices you shall have to make and a few suggestions. ➠ Dialogue or monologue? A monologue will be carefully structured and has to be consistent. A dialogue should avoid repetitions and be idiomatic. ➠ Salem or Hollywood? You will find some of the mechanisms are the same even though the context greatly differs. ➠ Main focus? Below are suggestions to help you decide what your dialogue or monologue will focus on: fear? Rumor? Personal story or general context and significance? Dialogue Monologue A / Salem • I chose to write a dialogue in which two residents of Salem are trading gossip about a third resident whom they accuse of witchcraft. – I seek to illustrate the part played by rumor in the scapegoating of innocent people. – I’m going to read up on rumor, hearsay, gossip, calumny. A / Salem • I chose to write a monologue given by someone who has been accused of witchcraft in Salem and is defending herself or himself. – I seek to illustrate the gravity of those accusations, the sense of injustice or fatality that comes with them, to convey the character’s impression of a shattered life, the weight of social judgment and the strict adherence to religion in Salem. – I am going to read up on what happened to the historical figures accused and the atmosphere of oppression prevalent at the time. • I chose to write a dialogue in which a Salem resident denounces a witch to a Judge making it clear that the accusation is false and based on personal grievance or ignorance. – I seek to illustrate the part played by denunciation in the scapegoating process. – I’m going to read up on denunciation, on the mechanics of it: denunciations follow one another in quick succession, it’s a chain of circumstances. • I chose to write a monologue given by a resident of Salem in which he or she opens up about his fear of witches. – I seek to illustrate the climate of fear in those days. – I’m going to read up on Puritan New England where fears were many : fear of going hungry, fear of Indian attacks, fear of isolation, fear of the unknown, fear of the wilderness as opposed to the civilized world, fear of Evil and of the figures that embody this Evil : witches, demons, the devil. • I chose to write a dialogue in which two residents of Salem discuss this historical episode in hindsight and wonder what it means. – I seek to illustrate the lessons that can be learned from past witchcrafts. – I’m going to read up on present-day witch-hunts so as to draw parallels without forgetting to address the places in which those contemporary witch-hunts occurred.
