En voici une nouvelle version revue et augmentée. La vie brève et mouvementée de l’outlaw Billy the Kid est une source d’inspiration inépuisable pour les romanciers, les cinéastes, les dramaturges, les poètes, le chanteurs et les musiciens (un ballet d’Aaron Copland), les historiens, les étudiants, les biographes, voire les gastronomes (il existe même un Kids Can Cook with Billy the Kid !). Dans cette Amérique puritaine qui veille pourtant farouchement sur la santé mentale et morale de sa jeunesse, les exploits meurtriers de Billy sont racontés (et vantés) dans de nombreux romans pour jeunes ainsi que dans de nombre d’ouvrages documentaires destinés à un public de jeunes lecteurs. En 1903, Walter Woods écrit une pièce de théâtre dans lequel il dépeint le jeune voyou comme un brave type qui a mal tourné. Cette biographie « canonique » va éviter à Billy the Kid de sombrer dans l’oubli. Burns combine les mythes que véhicule le récit « authentique » de Pat Garrett avec sa propre recherche, incluant des entrevues avec des amis du bandit. Burns n’était pas un historien, mais un écrivain doué, avec beaucoup d’imagination qui fait de Billy le Kid un bouc émissaire et non un tueur psychotique. Cette biographie largement romancée attire l’attention des réalisateurs de l’époque et dès 1930, King Vidor dirige un Billy the Kid interprété par Johnny Mack Brown. Dès lors, l’image de Billy comme héros tragique, victime des circonstances, s’impose et va contribuer à sa renommée. Le mythe est forgé !
