Daniel Landry C RÉSUMÉ Ce mémoire de ma? trise en sociologie a pour but de comprendre les motivations des jeunes Québécois à poser des gestes d'engagement citoyen à l'ère postmoderne Il faut entendre la postmodernité à la manière du sociologue Michel Freitag soit comme une dystopie à portée totalitaire se déployant à travers la globalisation néolibérale Dans un tel contexte d'impasse seront exposées les motivations à l'engagement d'un échantillon de jeunes Québécois rencontrés dans le cadre d'entretiens semi- dirigés Ces jeunes ont été sélectionnés en raison de leur implication au sein du mouvement des mouvements ? qu'est l'altermondialisme d'o? leur rapport critique face à la globalisation Leur engagement sera exploré selon trois facettes distinctes la nécessité de l'e ?cacité de l'engagement le rapport à l'altérité dans l'engagement l'engagement en fonction de la vision du futur Par sa démarche sociologique alliant théorie et empirie ce mémoire exposera un paradoxe dans l'engagement de ces jeunes Ils s'engagent en partie dans le but de dépasser l'aspect déshumanisant de la postmodernité mais dans leurs moyens de s'engager ils répondent pourtant en partie aux caractéristiques de l'individu postmoderne ABSTRACT The aim of this Master's thesis in sociology is to understand the motivation of Québec y outh to becoming involved in citizenship activities in the postmodern era Postmodernity has to be understood in the same way as Michel Freitag sees it as a dystopian society resembling a totalitarian system and extending to neoliberal globalization In light of such an impasse a sample group of young people were questioned in the context of semi-guided interviews and their reasons for becoming involved citizens will be presented These young people were selected because of their alter-globalization involvement hence their critical point of view toward globalization Their involvement will be explored from three distinct points of view the necessity to have e ?cient involvement activities the relationship towards others in involvement activities the involvement toward the future Through a sociological approach linking theory and empirical work this thesis will expose a paradox in the involvement of these young adults On the one hand they are partially invo lved to go beyond the dehumanizing aspect of postmodernity on the other hand by becoming involved theyare meeting the speci ?cations of a postmodern individual C REMERCIEMENTS La réalisation d'un mémoire de ma? trise constitue bien plus qu'un simple travail académique C'est une entreprise ô combien fastidieuse et formatrice qui nécessite de la rigueur de l'e ?ort et une grande persévérance Cette t? che aurait pour moi été impossible sans le support et les encouragements de personnes qui m'ont accompagné tout au long de ma démarche Je tiens tout d'abord à exprimer ma reconnaissance envers
