The responses may be negative or positive. The crux of the matter is that the person giving the response carefully formulates each response in a polite way. In the last unit, you learned how to make requests generally; and specifically ask for direction in a very polite way using the conditional tense. You also learned how to make requests impolitely using the imperative. You may have recognized some rude responses to requests and some polite forms of response too as in Dialogue 7 and 6 respectively. In the present unit, you will learn to give polite responses to requests even if the response is unfavourable. The request may be to show direction, an invitation, an offer of a kind etc. In the process of going through this unit, you will learn more about COD, COI and negative forms like ne... jamais. 2.0 OBJECTIVES By the time you finish this unit, you will be able to • Formulate polite responses to requests whether the response is favourable or not; • Analyse request/response situations to identify grammatical structures used to formulate polite responses e.g. Oui volontiers, désolé etc; and • Make correct sentences using these grammatical structures. 1 2 FRE 102: Basic French Grammar and Composition II 3 3.1 Dialogue 1 - Voudriez- vous téléphoner le directeur pour lui faire part de ce développement récent? - Oui, volontiers, je lui téléphone tout de suite. 5 6 3 4 7 FRE 102: Basic French Grammar and Composition II 4 3.2 Dialogue 2 - Pourriez- vous m'acheter cette voiture- ci comme cadeau de mon anniversaire prochain qui aura lieu le 3 mai 2002. - Oui, je le veux bien. 3.3 Dialogue 3 - Pourriez- vous porter ma natte ? - Bien sûr, donnez- la- moi ! 3.4 Dialogue 4 - Accepteriez- vous de dîner chez moi demain soir. - J'aimerais bien, mais je ne serai pas disponible. Merci, c'est gentil, mais je ne fume jamais la cigarette. 3.8 Grammaire et composition At this point, we shall analyse the seven episodes projected here so as to identify grammatical structures relevant to formulating polite responses to requests. Vous pourriez Pourriez- vous... ? Nous pourrions Pourrions- nous... ? • avec Est- ce que... ? Est- ce que tu pourrais... ? Est- ce que vous pourriez... ? 3.8.2 Formules de politesse. When you examine the episodes, you will be able to identify some grammatical features used to formulate politely the responses to the requests e.g. Positive - Oui, volontiers, - Oui, je veux bien. Négative - C'est dommage, mais... - Merci, c'est gentil, mais... We shall now look at some more examples of these `formules de politesse'. Positive - D'accord. - Oui, merci, c'est gentil. - Merci, avec plaisir. - Naturellement... Négative - Excusez- moi, mais je.. - Je regrette, mais je... - Désolée, je ne... Your response to this will be any of the following (they all mean the same thing in English, “You're welcome”. - De rien. - Je vous en prie. - Il n'y a pas de quoi. - Ce n'est pas grand- chose. Self Assessment Exercise 1 Transform the sentences into polite responses. i. - Pourrais- tu me donner ton crayon ? - Voici mon crayon. ii. - Est- ce que vous accepteriez d'aller au théâtre vendredi soir avec moi ? - Je n'accepte pas. i. - Aurais- tu la gentillesse de m'aider pousser cette voiture, elle est en panne. - Je suis pressé, monsieur. iv. - Voudriez- vous chanter avec moi. - Oui, oui. iv. - Pourrais- tu me téléphoner plus tard ? - Je ne serai pas libre. 3.8.3 Le COD + le COI We treated le COD and le COI in relation to the imperative in Module 3, unit 4. We looked at them separately. Here, we shall look at them in situations where they appear together in a sentence. However, before we go into that, let us revise each of them. Le COD (complément d'objet direct) i. Adaku achète la jolie robe Adaku l'achète. ii. Je vois l'écrivain Je le vois. iii. Nous regardons la chanteuse. Nous la regardons. iv. Les chats mangent les rats. Les chats les mangent. Note : aimer quelqu'un -=> Il m'aime. Attendre quelqu'un => Nous t'attendons Adorer quelqu'un =* Il t'adore. Inviter quelqu'un = Il nous invite.
